I have a buddy who has a commercial sign company. He was cleaning out the garage last night and GAVE me a 6ft strip of blue LED's with a little power box that I need to put a cord on. I have been shown how to do it using an old extension cord. I'm very excited about this. My tank is a 175 oceanic bowfront with a plastic canopy top. Due to the halides the canopy is rarely on. Here is my ?'s
Will this be good as a moonlight?
Would white sign led's grow coral..... or are these completly different??
I will get pics and more details on the blue strip in a minute

Moonlights yes, but there's probably very little PAR to help coral growth. Plus without optics or reflectors, there wouldn't be anything to "push" the light emitted too far into the tank to become useful except for aesthetics.
So moonlights yes, growth more than likely not even a little.
I'm sure more people will chime in. More info on the light would help too.

Well all I know about the light is what is written on it. I know it came out of a Chevron gas station sign. At least for moon lights I will be happy! He didnt have any white strips but I was hoping maybe I could get some off him if he ever came across some more to throw away. I like that it is safe for wet/dry applications. He did have an awesome 4ft strip of leds that were hooked up to a timer that basically made a multi light show! I said I want it! I would love to have a multi colored light show at night. He told me NO he was using it for a project of his. : ( lol....

You could also pretty much do whatever you want with an old computer power supply and this link. www.xoxide.com They also have all sorts of pc peripherals. laser lights, plasma lights, led lights, cold cathode, el light strips etc. have fun.

I really love the new blues in the tank tonight! It just came alive with beautiful colors! I finally have 6ft of Blue LED's to cover the whole tank! All of it is bright and the shimmer on the sand bed is awesome!! YAY!!! Im a happy girl! I tried to get befor and after pics but it just wasnt coming out good. BUT IM HAPPY!!!!

Wallsmart has rope (blue or red) lights 12feet for 10 bucks. They also have 24 inch grow lights and black lights that are the bulb and the fixture for 10 bucks. I think they are t12s. Wonder if anyone has used any of it.
