I've had some rock dried and dead sitting in a bin now for over a year. I rinsed one off that I want to drill frag plug holes in but I"m worried. Since everything is long dead and dry, after I rinse is there any need to worry about an ammonia spike?
ive heard of it spiking because of the dead organisms that are in the nooks and crannies...to be safe throw it in a rubbermaid trash can with a heater and a powerhead and some old tank water...that way you dont have to worry about it being dead
it depends on how big your system is. I have about 40 pounds of dry rock also that i will be puting in my sump to start a fuge. But i will put them in a bucket of saltwater for at least 1-2 weeks before i start adding it to the sump to be sure. as for me i am working with about 215-225g of total water so i though it will spike
I never had any spike when adding dead rock to my current systems all i do in rinse in old sw or new sw and add to tank, right now I am seeding dead rock in my 8 gallon
