Will trade frags for T5 lights

If you are looking for bang for your buck (and want to show T5's who's boss plus get uber cool shimmer lines..) my suggestion would be...

retro

Cheaper than any decent T5 setup out there.
sorry Jas for the thread-jack...

Agreed... hard to beat 250 or 400 halides in the bang for the buck department.

T5s are great when heat, electricity usage, or size of canopy are major concerns

Honestly I run halides on all my tanks and have never had to use a chiller and have never had a tank get above 83. As for electricity usage... once you get into these larger T5 set-ups (esp. 6 or 8 lamp 39watt) you are using the same wattage as a DE 250 for the same amount of coverage. Canopy? Hanging fixtures have that sex appeal!

I think both can do extremely well. I find my T5 setup to be more light than 175 or 150 hqis, but less than 250s. I also find that my overdriven 4 bulb T5 setup uses a bit more electricity than 175 or 150 hqis. I think it is a bit more energy efficient than halides for the PAR, but not drastically. I like pendants too... my next tank will be large and will likely have halides and T5s.

I think both have advantages and disadvantages - there is no clear winner. Choose your priorities and see which fits them best.

I agree kroe! Not everyone can accomodate a halide setup (ballast, hanging pendants or dealing with the heat of retro's in a canopy) so T5's make a suitable substitute. I've been VERY pleased with my T5 experience so far, mainly being the ability to truly "tune" it to the color of your liking. It just disappoints me when I see so many companies jumping on the bandwagon and marketing sub-par fixtures. "they're T-5's... they must be good" seems to catch far too many people, when in reality in order to fully utilize these lamps you have to spend $$$.
