Would someone please tell me why

I can't get a simple continuous syphon going properly from my tank to my sump? I looked at melevs diagram and understand what is supposed to happen, but it ain't happening.

I can get the flow going no proplem with real good flow--but eventually over about 1/2 hour the sump side of the flow water amount in less, barely covering my RIO 1700, amd is very high in my display tank, almost overflowiing. I have a CPR Continuous Overflow--and a 10 gallan acrylic sump.

Anyone? Please...

Do you have a valve on the return end of the pump? You need to be able to regulate your return rate so you dont pump more water into the tank than the overflow can release. Once you are at or below the flow rate of the overflow it will self adjust.

A simple valve from Home depot installed in the return plumbing between the pump and the main tank solve this. Without it you need to get a pump thats exactly the same flow rate as the overflow or one that is less efficient.

Thanks, wahwoo--that's what made sense to me. I'll have to test my plumbing skills I guess. I'll pick up a flow valve today.
