Yet ANOTHER Scott's pet shop thread

Well....it's been a long time since anybody's started a thread bashing Scott's pet shop......and I'm not going to start one now.

GOTCHA!!

I've posted in a few threads that I've been looking for a few tangs. This morning I took the drive over to Deep Reef in Downers to see if I could get my "tang fix". No such luck....nice tangs, but not what I was looking for. From there, my wife wanted to go to Tinley, so just for kicks, I headed to Tinley, by way of Scott's pet shop....thought I'd give it a try after all these years, and wondering if folks inside had changed for the better. I walked in and started looking for tangs. No Achilles....no powder blue.....Wait a minute....there's a pretty nice looking Red Sea Sohal....sticker says $99, just like most of the others I've seen, but this tang is a little larger and nicer looking than the others. I was trying to decide whether I wanted to part with the cash or not when I looked up and remembered the signs that say 20% off saltwater fish. SOLD! I walked down the aisle, saw an employee and asked if he was busy. He said no, and asked what he could do for me. I told him I wanted the Sohal. He then asked one question and made a statement. He asked what size tank I was going to put him in and I answered 180 gallon. He then stated that the Sohals can get pretty aggressive....I told him there were no other fish in the tank, just sps corals. At checkout, he also told me that the salinity the fish was in was lower than I might expect so acclimate the fish slowly.

All things considered, I'm pleased. The fish looks good (pics to come later) and the employee was pleasant. I suspect he is langchin that has posted on the "Scott's bashing" threads.

I just want to say Thanks.....nice job.

Jeff

cool.. I haven't read the threads about bashing... The only negative thing I could say about them is that when i went they were to busy doing other stuff to help w/ what I wanted to buy.. so it took forever..

And here he is....only 10 to 15 minutes out of the bag. Sorry the pic is crappy.....he's kinda washed out from the flash cuz he was right up next to the glass. Other pics had more accurate colors, but were just a blur....this guy is cruising back and forth like there's no tomorrow.

Jeff

Beautiful Jeff!

Are you going to add anything else before she takes that tank over?

Thank You. I really don't know if I'll add anything else or not. That tank has been up for nearly 2 years now and the only fish that have ever been in it were a foxface and a sailfin tang.....I found the sailfin tang stuck to the intake of my reefflo pump a few months back....poor thing couldn't get himself free and perished. I moved the foxface into a 40 gal. frag tank on my other system a few weeks ago. I'm not sure where this will all lead....I think I'd eventually like to have a school of 5 yellow tangs, and a powder blue in this tank. If I decide to try it, I'll get the yellows (small) and the powder blue at the same time, move the Sohal out to the frag tank on that system for a week or so and once the others are established, move the sohal back in....I think....LOL
I've had pretty good luck mixing tangs in my 150 gallon tank so I know it can be done.

What was the coral section looking like at Scotts? Havent been there in a couple years.

Pitiful.

not much in the way of coral at all. I saw no sps's at all....only a few lps and a couple shrooms and whatnot. Not at all what I was hoping to see.

Jeff

I've had some good luck mixing tangs as well. Once I schooled 5 small yellows and five quarter sized blue hippo's. I kept them all together over a year without any hitches until I had equipment failure and lost the whole tank. When I set back up again, I decided to go with a single of each tang and added a Scopas, Chevron and a Red Sea Sailfin. I love tangs, there's so many more I'd love to add but I'd need a WAY bigger tank then a 180! :)

I had a similiar incident happen to my hippo tang on a 6200 stream. His whole side had the imprints of the stream imbedded into him, even his eye. I got very lucky as he hid for a few days and was able to pull through it. It took about 2 months but he has healed up and shows no signs of the incident.

BTW, do you work at the LaSalle or Braidwood plant? I deliver bread to the Braidwood plant every Monday.

Well, if you wouldn't mind relaying my message of thanks and nice job to langchin (there can't be too many tattooed chinese guys working there) the next time you stop in, I'd appreciate it.

Jeff

nice find, not to mention a great looking fish. I use to live close by Scotts and they are always busy ,its best to get there early in the day and not on weekends......

This fish is too cool....he takes 4 or 5 big bites from the nori and then spits out a mouthful of little bits....then he swims around like mad and eats all the little pieces out of the water column.

and I just called Scott's on a SUNDAY AFTERNOON and they ANSWERED THE PHONE!!!

this must be the end of the world as we know it........
