Actually, I don't consider this a meral spread. It is a display common in many Odontodactylids and is more of a maxilliped flare. It is aggressive in nature.

O. s. don't use a meral spread much except as an antipredator threat. That seems to be true of many species.

whoooppps.....thanks.......my bad! i can't tell the difference (and actually have never heard of a maxilliped flare), although i do remember you mentioning that O.s. do not use meral spread much, and thought this was a good example - sigh.

i guess the phtographer was not threatening enough - LOL
