Zeo vs Vodka

I don't know if this has been discussed here before but after looking at somethings, who feels or does not feel that vodka dosing is a cheeper version of Zeovit? Does anyone feel that Zeovit was spawned off of the vodka dosing idea?

I don't ... JMO :fun4:

However, components of the ZEOvit methodology and "vodka dosing" ... along with components of ProdiBio's product line, components of Aqua Connect's "Bacto Pure" (repackaged ProdiBio ... IIRC) product line, components of Polyp Lab's "System Reef-resh" product line, and components of FaunaMarin's "Ultra Bio" product line ... do share a common idea which might be summed up in two words: "Limiting Nutrient". This "common idea" emerged from biological research decades before either husbandry strategy was developed.

A "limiting nutrient" is a chemical (nutrient) necessary for growth, but available in a concentration insufficient to support continued growth. Once the limiting nutrient is exhausted, growth ceases. If a limiting nutrient is introduced to a population, growth will be promoted until limitation by that or another nutrient or some other limiting factor occurs.

Carbon is a limiting nutrient for bacteria. Vodka, and components of various product lines, introduce a "carbon source" into a captive marine ecosystem. As a result, the concentration of carbon is no longer "limiting"... a condition which alters the growth rate and biomass of the bacteria within that ecosystem.

Personally, I think of vodka as a "poor-man's Zeovit". I know that nutrient reduction is just one part, and that Zeo is a complete system (bacteria, food, supplements, etc.). I dose vodka, Kent amino acids, and oyster eggs to try to replicate their system. I'm not saying it is even comparable. I like the idea of Zeovit but don't want the expense.

Yes, vodka the alcoholic drink. It is used as a carbon source for bacteria. Do a search. There a many threads on the subject.

interesting, i am gonna have to drink along witht eh fish, now i have an excuse to drink and buy Grey Goose.

any excuse for the goose.. i bought some but it never made it to the aquarium.. i left the lid off and it evaporated

I thought this was going to be a good thread. If this thread were moved to another forum it would get more hits (hint hint).

FWIW - vodka is the poor mans carbon source:D (actually I dont know how it compares $ /ml - could be tyhe rich mans zeo). It alone doesnt replicate any of the systems that Meso mentioned - it just acts as a non specific carbon source that feeds existing bac strains. The diffrence with Zeo Prodi Fauna M and PolipLabs is that you get bac strains in the right proportions fead by carbon that is designed to meet thier specific requirements

I agree however it is possible that these Bac strains can also do well with Vodka as the carbon source. This is what I am going to try. :)

how would one dose vodka (ml per gal., etc.)?
My method was about 200 ml for me, and 20 ml for my 80g+30g sump :D

I know this was a joke (I do appreciate a good vodka joke) but 20 ml for 110 gallons is way, way too much. The recommended dosage is probably about 2-2.5 ml. Definitely do a search and read up before starting. Vodka has worked great for me.

BTW- I dose vodka and skim big to keep nutrients low. I ordered some Zeovit Pocci-Glow and Pohl's CV. Should be here next week. Can't wait to try it.
