zero nitrates on a wet/dry system

Reefing in NE
Since this is a good "problem" I dont feel bad asking about it. I have a 55g. reef tank with a wet/dry sump (I have been slowly removing the bio balls) and the last two times I tested my water I came up with a zero reading for nitrates. Has this happened to other people? I was always under the impression that you can almost never get zero nitrates with a wet/dry because the bio balls are too good at what they do. Any opinions?

how much bio ball do you still have in? If you still have some in, are you going to keep them in or continue to remove the rest over time?

I would say the chamber with the bio balls is about half full. I am kind of debating the issue of removing the rest or letting it go for now. If the tank has found some kind of balance I dont want to mess it up.
