What things are absolutly nesasary for starting a 10 gallon fish only set up. I will most likely add in some live rock later when I have the money.

i dont know about that.... check around before you buy. i found a ten gallon for sale at a garage sale for a dollar. then i went to wal-mart and found a cheap heater for 7 dollars and then i bought the hood and cheap lights for 15. transfered water from another tank to set it up, and found a filter setup for 15. Went with sand from another tank, and a few chunks of live rock, and next thing you know, i got me a little bitty nano... and its all bout to get torn down and done up right.
