100 mm 2.8L info

The Dual IS will be awesome for doing handheld shots and I assume the AF will be extremely fast. Great for taking fish shots.

For the type of macro shooting I do (corals) I do not see much use for the new features considering the lens is on a tripod being manually focused. If you are going to be walking around hand holding it to take bug shots or something I could see where the new IS technology would help.

i love my canon 100mm f/2.8 macro but dont always take it on trips because I cant always carry a tripod. If it was IS i would use it more.

i know a lot of you here will tell me to buck up and carry my tripod with me.

That's like the pot calling the kettle black. Sometimes I don't even bring my camera on a hike through the woods because it gets heavy after 20 miles. Of course I can say I've taken a camera instead of food because I knew it would get heavy. I would never substitute water though.

Interesting. I have to wonder why they say that it does not replace the current 100/2.8 macro but rather supplements it? The only possible advantage to the existing lens could be size/weight (and price)... unless the new lens is a dedicated macro (no infinity focus?)

I wonder if this is going to find it's way into other lenses, especially some of their expensive long tele's that have the current dual IS? Gives Canon another reason to release updates

It'll be a price point thing. Look at the 70-200 f/4L When they released the IS version they kept the original, (which is still a hell of a lens), and it still sells quite well.

Gotcha; the way it was written (at least the thing that I read), sort of implied that if you bought this lens, you'd still want to keep your old 100mm f/2.8.

That's the way I read it too; the use of the word "supplement" is curious. They must have it would supplement their lens lineup, not replace. I just sorta figured that was implied since this one is an L and the other is not, I wouldn't have thought the 100/2.8 was being dropped.

I didn't think much of it because like beerguy said, there are 4 versions of the 70-200L and several consumer grade lenses in similar focal lengths.
