105 shallow 72x24x14

Slow day at work, so figured I'd share for anyone wanting a read.

After a 5 day power outage, generator issues and the loss of A LOT of livestock; I have come to the realization that I need to consolidate down to a larger, single tank.

5 up and running tanks and one in the works is getting to be just too much.

All my tanks are small:

45 standard
36 bow
60 cube
15 standard
~25 cube (18x18)
26 shallow (30x20x10) in work...

I love this hobby, but I'm not a fish store (like my wife says) and she views me as a hoarder. lol! :rolleye1:

We do not have a large house by any means, (1,800) so you can imagine.

So, I am authorized one more tank as long as get rid of 4.

I will keep the 18" cube and 30x20x10 shallow.

My buddy just got a 72x18x12 shallow and it is AWESOME looking.

The 6 foot gives me the length I need to open up a lot more options as far as live stock.

The 18" depth is a little to shallow for me. So I am wanting 24" and my AI lighting wont have spillover.

The 12" height, although looked awesome, would be a little too short with a sand bed and the water line drop from the lip.

So, 72x24x14" is what I decided on. 16" tall just lost "that look" if that makes any sense...

Then the question came acrylic or glass...

I have requested estimates from numerous custom tank manufactures.

Believe it or not, acrylic is coming in around the same price as glass which is surprising to me...

Seeing how I want rimless it will be 1" walls and 1/2" bottom for an acrylic tank.

Glass is 1/2" walls and either 5/8" or 3/4" bottom.

I've ran these two options around in my head for the past week. Read every Acrylic vs Glass thread I could find and it really boiled down to what is best for me and what meets my needs.

Glass is the answer to that:

Reason 1 - Scratches. Yes, I know glass can scratch as well and acrylic can be buffed out, but I have never scratched a glass tank before. (Knock on wood)

My 30x20x10 acrylic has light scratches all over it just from simply handing it.

Reason 2 - 1/2" wall thickness vs 1". Granted 1" would look awesome, I'd have issues with my mp40's and whatever else.

So I am in the process of waiting for all the estimates come in.

Miracles (Florida)
Glass Cages (I know...)
Planet
Reef Savvy
Deep Blue (not taking custom orders at this time)
Advanced Acrylics (John was very helpful)
Acrylic Creations (Dave as always helpful)
Barrier Reef

Some places seem to nickel and dime you for things I feel should be standard.

Much of my equipment is overkill and will work on this new tank just fine.

* Vertex Omega 130 skimmer (I know I've had issues, but I'm hoping a different sump and larger tank will fix that)

* Vertex media reactors

* AI Vega colors (Need 2 more tank mounts and 12" EXT rails)

* Aqua Ultraviolet UV sterilizer (Not convinced they are even needed, but I have it so I'm using it) lol!

and I have every plumbing pipe and fitting you an think of to plumb this thing...

and that's where I'm at now.

May want to check these guys out. I got this email the other day. I haven't purchased a tank from them yet, but they got back to me within hours with a quote.

Man, getting estimates is like pulling teeth. I'm sure they are plenty busy, but still. Lol!

So far, only 3 estimates came in over the past 2 weeks. Ranging from $850 - just shy of $1,300.

One company I thought would be lower that is know for "glass" quoted me the same cost as an acrylic tank shipped from the west coast.

All the LFS's in my area ALL deal with Planet in Texas. Guess they head up here weekly.

The 72x18x12 my buddy has is from Planet. It's built pretty well. Clean silicone work, polished edges and all the panes are dead even. 1/2" walls with a 3/4" bottom.

It does have a bottom plastic rim however. (Which is alright with me I guess, although completely frameless would look cleaner.)

Coast to coast emailed me back asking if I wanted Starphire on any sides and if I was interested in a steel powder coated frame as well.

I replied; just waiting on response back.

Hopefully more will roll in next week.

I have been told Marineland has a patent on curved overflows?..

I think once you pass the 12" height for acrylic, than the thickness would have to go up which means pricing. 3/4" would work for rimless but 1" is nice for this tank size.

Estimates are rolling in slowly... Man, some are WAY up there...

I just can't see 2 grand for a regular glass (non-low iron) 72x24x14 rimless tank.

I understand $2-300 of that for shipping depending on location.

I was thinking more along the lines of a thousandish...

Majority are around $1,200 to 1,300 with shipping; Guess I'm not too far off the mark there.

I do not require a PVC bottom or stainless steel bracing... However, I'm sure that's nice stuff though.

I know the saying you get what you pay for, but then again I have over paid for a few things in my day...

Just ordered a 72x24 R&J Enterprises stand and canopy. Solid oak in espresso. Got a KILLER deal.

If I end up going the shallow route I can return the canopy no problem.

Should have my estimate from Planet hopefully today or tomorrow...

That estimate will be the deciding factor on whether to spend $$$ on a custom shallow or spend $$ on a standard 180 reef ready.

Got the estimate from Planet. Very reasonable, 7 year warranty and they are somewhat close to me.

They actually said it would be more beneficial cost wise to go 15" tall (due to cuts)

Placing the order tomorrow.

Tank and stand on order. Lead time 4-6 weeks.

72x24x15

Regular glass (1/2" walls, 3/4" bottom)

Black silicone

Center trapezoid over flow

Black vinyl on back glass

Schedule 80 bulkheads: 1-1/2" overflow, 1" return. (Gaskets thicker on schedule 80. I will plump with regular flex PVC).

Cancelling R&J stand and canopy.

Ordered 72x24x36 Coastal stand in traditional mahogany. (7 year tank warranty with this combo)

Umm.....

This is the nano section, limited to 34G of total water volume.

Right you are sir!

I saw the large tank section was dedicated to 180g+, so I simply posted in this forum.

I just went into the nano thread sticky and saw the 34 gallons, so my bad for posting in the wrong section.

Guess I should have dug a little deeper. :hmm2:

If the Moderators would move this to the correct section I would appreciate. (Tank Journals & Builds)

Good catch Homer.

I pinged a mod to move it.

Didn't mean to be a d*ck about the tank size, but I've been watching it for the past week and thought it was time I mentioned this is the nano section.

Not worries at all... I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong.

Hopefully they will move it, if not I'll just start a new thread in the right section once everything comes in.

Glad you caught it and said something.
