10g quarantine too small for Blue Tang?

4 years in the hobby and I finally get ich.
I'll admit I got lazy. I have a complete 10g quarantine setup, I just didn't use it.
So now I am attempting to save my blue tang, which for now is the only fish in my 120g tank showing signs of ich.

My question is, can I use the setup I have for a blue tang?
What I have for my quarantine setup is a 10g tank, 50g rated canister filter, nano powerhead, heater, and cheapo light.

I could maybe fit a 20L in that space, but anything bigger is going to be hard do find space for.

If one fish has Ich, odds are every fish in that tank now has it. All fish need to be treated and your 120g needs to be left fallow for 10+ weeks.

I wouldn't QT any tang in a 10 gal; so the 20L is your absolute minimum IMHO. But if you treat just the tang, and put him back in the 120g without treating all the other fish, he'll just get Ich again. I suggest your list all your fish so a suitable size QT can be recommended for all of them.

I doubt I'll be able to catch all of them. Even if I could I can't afford or fit much more than a 20L right now. If everyone gets sick, this may end up being my first whipe. :sad1:

The livestock is 2 firefish (1 red , 1 purple)
1 ORA Shark Nose Goby (bringer of the ich)
1 Blue Tang
2 Ocelaris Clownfish
1 Coral Beauty
1 Flame Angel

It would be tight, but I think you could treat all those in a 29 gal. (Or better to put the firefish & goby in the 10 gal; treat all the rest in the 29.) 29 gal has the same dimensions as a 20L, only taller. Or if money is the issue go to Walmart, and buy one (or two) of these. Their website says $51 for a set of 4, but I'm pretty sure you can buy them individually in-store.

Catching the fish is going to be the hardest part.

I'll run to Petco in the morning and see if any of the my local stores are having the $ a gallon sale. If they are, I'll see what I can afford, but I'd also need a stand.
With a 20L I could just put it on a old desk I have, maybe I could turn the 10g into a sump for the 20l. Giving me alittle more water volume.

What should I be running in the quaratine system?
Afew months ago when the LFS was going out of buiness. I picked up alot of freebies, including some meds, vitamins and coral food.
The meds I have are, Seachem's Neoplex, Metronidazol, Focus, Kanaplex and ParaGuard. Also I have Curpiron and PraziPro.
I know Cuprion would work, but I am hesitant to use it as it says "experts only" and I am more in the derp catergory.

I had to look Cuprion up. It looks similar to Cupramine, so I think it will work for you. The directions say, "1 drop per gallon of water increases free copper concentration by ~0.20 ppm." A copper level of 0.40 ppm should get the job done, but raise it slowly (take a few days) to get it to that level. While raising it, watch those angels carefully for signs of copper intolerance (first sign, they stop eating). And buy a Salifert copper test kit if it doesn't break the bank.

You are looking at lots of WCs to keep the ammonia under control (add Cuprion to replacement water). Buy one of these to monitor the ammonia. Also, you are going to need some kind of filtration/water flow in the QT. A HOB powerfilter would do it and/or a powerhead. Or even an air driven sponge filter.

P.S. If this Cuprion stuff freaks you out, pick up a bottle of Cupramine. It's more "derp" friendly. ;)

This sounds more like an excuse than a valid reason not to treat your fish. Any fish can be caught. Use some Brute-type plastic containers. Siphon or pump most of the water into the containers. Fish will collect in spots with water remaining. Catch them. Return water with a bucket or pump. If $ is a problem, return containers to Wal-Mart. :strange:

I picked up the 20L and started running it. I added a bubble stone to the equipment running on it.
I also took the bioballs from the canister filter and soaked them in the filter sock from my larger tank.
I have a fish trap, that I am letting sit in the tank, but the fish I have, have all seen what happened to the evil damsel, and seem to remember to stay away from it.

The only other way to catch all the fish would be to remove 120-150lbs of rock, clams, anenomes and feather dusters. Drain and store half the water, then net all the fish. Refill tank, restack rock the way I like it (several hours) and then start the fallow countdown.
