am setting up a 12g acrylic tank with a aqua medic ocean light pendant. i'd like to use a 20k bulb co'z i like the coloration that it brings out on the corals but at the same time i also wanna see a lot of growth, planning to keep some softy, lps & sps. so would a 150w be good enough or 250w would be too much?

a 250 would be way to much, that is what I use to light my 40, and it is just right, Id go with the 175, but you might have heating problems, but you could definatly keep anything you wanted in that tank.

ya that 70w viper MH would be fine man...i dont know exactly what its called but its a 70w that clips on the back of ur tank and hangs over

The 250 is total over kill.

The 150 is over kill, but not by much.

The 70 will serve well and you could probably keep whatever you liked (including SPS).

You should be looking at adding a chiller, too.

A lot of growth is foolish in a nano, I think.

All the best with it.

coral cooking guide!

70w=rare - medium
150w = well done
250w = CAJUN BLACKENED CORALS!!!

In other words unless you want to boil top ramen in your tank a 250w is way too much light and heat.

sorry for sarcasm....way too early here!!

PCs are a good suggestion.

I have 110w of pc and 40w of no. I can still warm a hotdog or even a greasy burger over my rig.

A chiller is a must for a 55 litre (sorry about my modern speak).

Chill, man, chill.

Myself i am dumping the stock lighting completely and going with a 70watt MH retrofit.
I am doing it first to grow out my frags that i pick up with a 10k bulb and then after i get everything fragged and looking the way i like it i will pop in a 20k bulb for the best looking but slowest growing lighting.
Once i gut the hood for the retrofit i can do a lot of fan work to help keep things cool
