180 Stock Ideas

Hi all,

I'm getting back into the hobby after a long break. I'm setting up my 180 FOWLR aggressive tank right now. I've got about a 40 gallon sump with a Bubble Magnus NAC6 filter and around 180 pounds of rock. I'm thinking about how I'm going to stock the tank, here's my general idea.

Clown Trigger
Purple Tang
Harlequin Tusk

Emperor Angel
Dogface or Golden Puffer
HumaHuma Rectangular Trigger
Snowflake Eel
Lunar Wrasse
Flame Angel

I know the Clown Trigger has a bad rep, but I've kept more than one in the past with no issues, and it's pretty much the reason I got back into the hobby so I will be getting one. I plan on adding him as a juvenile and last. In fact I plan of adding all these fish as juveniles.

Any glaring issues? Could the Flame Angel hang with the bigger fish? Any cool expensive eels I could put in instead of the snowflake? Suggestions? I'm dead set on the first three fish, open to input on the rest. I also see how this could be overstocked, thoughts?

Thanks for any help.

I have a 210 with similar fish to your list and I feel I'm maxed out at 7. They are all between 4-5" right now. I have a yellow belly dogface and tusk, a pinktail and pair of blujaws, a majestic angel and orange shoulder tang. I have the same experiences with aggressive fish and I found it's definitely best not to crowd them. I would probably drop the humu, lunar, and flame. The emporer and clown will battle for king. My clown trigger was pulled out of my 180 because of aggression toward my other triggers, he left my dogface puffer and lionfish alone. I only kept 5, the forementioned with a humu and a niger when I had the 180. The clown turned a bit nasty at about 7" and I had raised the niger and humu from an inch, so the clown went to a 1000g at a local bar. I like your list, I'm also researching a cool eel for a species tank. http://www.wetwebmedia.com/HIDragonMorayArt.htm

Thanks for the input. The flame can definitely go, was a last minute idea. Maybe another tang instead of the lunar would be the way to go.

Thanks for the input from your experience. The flame angel was a last minute idea, never kept one and was interested in what people had to say about them, I could definitely drop him from the list though. Maybe another tang instead of the more aggressive lunar wrasse would be a good idea too.

Okay guys I think I have my final list for my 180, still trying to decide between the Harlequin Tusk and Coris Wrasse. What do you guys think of this tank?

Purple Tang
Harlequin Tusk /Red coris wrasse
Skeletor eel
Golden Puffer
Golden Heart Trigger
Emperor Angel
Clown Trigger

The first four are okay.

The last three are not even close. If you want a clown trig, use the 180 and put him as the only fish in there. Then it'll be okay.
Emperor Angels need way bigger tanks, and same goes with the GH trig.

To answer your question, I would go with the Harlequin tusk.

I decided to go with the Huma Huma instead of the Golden Heart. I've always loved the Huma Huma and it reminds me of snorkeling in Hawaii, plus they are known to be slow growers and don't get as big as the GH.

Definitely going with the Harlequin as well. I'm also very open to upgrading to a larger 300+ gallon tank when the time comes. I will plan on that.

Do Emperor Angels do well with triggers generally? It's the only fish on the list I haven't kept in the past.

I mean if you want an expensive eel you could get a the japanese dragon. Definitely the most exotic looking eel, but comes at a premium.

Or a

Tesselata eel. (not as expensive)

I had this guy, they dont get very big either.

How would you even clean a tank with a dragon or Tesselata in there? :eek1:

Just use a magnet for the glass or something with an arm. Most eels are somewhat scared when you go in the tank if you keep an eye on them you will be fine

The Japanese Dragon Moray is definitely a dream fish for me, I wouldn't want him eating my fish though. Going with the Skeletor Eel because it looks awesome and is pebble toothed.

I would be really worried about the triggers picking on such a small eel. I had a peaceful sargassum trigger that would pick on large 30+" zebra eel.

I would go with the larger more aggressive snowflake eel.

I was under the impression that they grew to about the same size.
