Hi guys,
I am thinking of putting a shark or maybe a sting ray in my 180. I will also have a queen angel, emperor angel, and maybe blue girdled angel, along with some clowns, and a few misc small fish. What are your thoughts about how well they might do??
Thanks,
Bill

I'm not a shark guy but I do know that large angels should not be mixed with sharks and rays. As far as I know a 180 is too small for any shark long term.

No experience but will tell you what has been said by those with experience 1000x over and they are right IMO.

No where near big enough for any stingray and any commonly available shark will out grow it in a short time. Also angels are notorious for picking at the eyes of stingrays and bethnic sharks.

My large Dussumieri Tang did that to my Stingray :( Was horrible.

Maybe a little late but found this thread accidentely so decided to post because I was wondering the same thing some time back.

You have a few sharks appropriate in this tank size but if you don't want the shark to be unhappy you should upgrade when the shark gets big. The best would probably be the brown banded cat shark or the coral cat shark. The brown banded reaches about 105 cm max so it will most likely outgrow the tank and the coral cat shark about 70cm.
Sharks should have their length x3 or more in the length of the tank and x1,5 or more in the depth. Height doesn't matter because you shouldn't take any other sharks than ground sharks.
They should have enough shelter and not alot of debris on the ground because they could scratch their belly.
Large angels aren't a problem with ground sharks, however emperor and queen together might end up in a disaster for one of the two.

Hi Raven, thanks for the reply. I have a queen, emperor and blue girdled along with a flame and moorish idol. all get along really well together. Queen and blue girdled are pretty big, but the emperor is a med juvi. Thanks for the reply.

what about a california stingray? how big do those get in an aquarium?

does not mean that it is right, but i did a google and saw quite a few cali stingrays in 100-200g tanks.

how fast do they grow? say a juvie 3-4" growing to 7-8"? 1 yr, 2 yrs, 3yrs?

I had 2 cali's that were pups at 2 1/4" at birth, at 3 months they were 3 1/2", sexual maturity is 5 1/2" approx at 2 1/2-3 years ( I have read) 200 gallon tank good for a year at 5" disc width max. These creatures need room to swim and forage, shouldnt be cooped up to tight and they become very tame to there feeder. I have a female thats around 5 years old and she is 18" long and around 11" wide so they need big space, 8-9' round area.

oh I forgot to mention, Rays should have few tank mates, I had at one time 2 Grunts and they would spook the rays because of themselves being spooked when I would look down into the pool. Groupers would be ok and maybe a few Tangs if they are disease free, no eels, triggers, lion fish (possible sting) and angels WILL pick on them some time and I wouldnt trust a big eel.

what do you keep your temp at? do you try to keep your nitrate levels under a certain level?

i just recently saw a couple at my LFS and thought they were prettty neat. If i can find a decent deal on a used big tank with equipment, i would consider them.

i just started reading more about the stingrays and am very intrigued. Just signed up a shark and stingray central.

Cali rays need colder water

Most info says they can be kept in water down to the high 50s and up to the high 60's, but if you look at their habitat ranges they can be found from northern california down to nearly the tip of mexico (along with true Cortez's) where the water is in the upper 70's, four of mine came from a distributer out of mexico. My water temps vary from 66 in the winter to 78 in the summer and they have done just fine. I do notice they are much more active at the higher temps. Aquarium Of The Pacific (Cal.) keeps their's at the low 60's if I remember right then they are less active and eat only twice a week, of course they grow slower like that. Have you thought about a round plastic watering trough from a farm supply to house some Rays? You can get those for under 300.00
