What can be done to control a brown diatom bloom in my tank....? Also, why are gobies so prone to committing suicide by jumping out of tanks....had no problem b4, but in the last week....lost 2 gobies and a flasher wrasse to suicide by vaulting.....the flasher set a new record for distance in the process.....I had to make covers for the wave out of a ceiling grid to put a lid on this problem....

I would say something is off in your tank chemistry, your fish are jumping most likely due to high nitrates or phosphates. I would run some gfo to help get your tank back inline for now

The tank is a few months old.....my phosphates were .1 and nitrates were fine.....i checked it b4 i did a water change.....livestock includes 3 chromis 3 clowns 2 small tangs, royal gramma and a midas blenny

Also, I have quite a bit of coral in this tank that is healthy.....along with two large cleaner shrimp and a peppermint shrimp....when I had a nano these critters were extrememly effected by higher nitrate levels...

I had a jumper this week as well. new sandsifting goby. My first carpet surfer.

Might be other fish pestering it.

I have a lot of corals and they seem fine, so I'm guessing the little dude lost out on a turf war.

do you have a sixline wrasse? I think mine might have been pestering the sandsifter.

I have brown algae in spots like you seem to have. That's why I bought the sandsifter.

Healthy and diatom bloom don't go together....plus all thos fish jumping within a few weeks. There's obviously a issue with water parameters. What brand test kits are you using?

Not sure I understand how the water gets cloudy from using phosphate reactor, thats the first time I've ever heard of that.

THe tank is a few motnhs old... with all those fish and corals you probably don't have the biological filter built up enough to handle such a load so quick. Nothing good comes quick in this hobby, thats the main saltwater rule to live by.
I'd bet on your water being off in some way, you should take a sample to the store you mainly shop at and have them run test on it for you. That will point you in the right direction to fixing what problem is there

Pirate, that why I bought the diamond goby also.....he was doing a good job.....til he floor surfed....
Eric, I rinsed the phosban well b4 i loaded the reactor....but i think powder is still being released....

ah, so its the copper colored stuff getting into the tank? In the reaction chamber the phosoban should just be bubbling, sort of like coffee does

Get a fuge going ,It will deffenitly help, as far as wresses go thats their nature in my opinion,I had many jump out even after my tank was running for many yrs.I had an 8 inch aluminum barrier connected to the rear of my canopy and they still jumped out over that between pendants.I'ts just bad luck.

How old is the media, its usually only good for what a month?

Wrasses are jumpers forsure, but that many jumping not sure you can just caulk that up to bad luck or something up.

Just remembered stray voltage in a tank causes fish to act out, do you have a grounding probe in your tank. Heaters are number one cause of stray voltage and Im sure yours are on much more do to the beautiful cleveland weather.

you shoulda grabbed a conch when you were at my work today. they eat diatoms off the sand like crazy. also there might be a short in one of of pumps or heater and that might cause the fish to jump but normally they all die real quick when thats the case
