I bought this 3 head Dendro colony at the end of August, last year. This was a pic the day that i got it.

A fews weeks ago, the head in front died off. It was on the sandbed and some red slime got on it and over about a week it died. I check it pretty close every few days to see if the head would come back. Even after my hermits did a job on the dead flesh, there always was a little orange still left but i gave up hope of it coming back last week.

Today i take a close look and there are babies ALL OVER the dead head! I cant even see most of the back but i can count at least 21 baby heads! None of these were there last week, or at least not visible.
Anyone ever had this happen?
How can that many even live and grow that close to each other?!?!

Heres some pics, you can see a few of the larger baby heads at the bottom rim of the dead head.

Mine did that as well. I don't really like advertising it though because I don't want to encourage people trying it. It is cool, but my babies are growing slowly (It has been almost 5 months and the heads still have a lot of growing to do until they are adults) and I would rather have a few big polyps than a ton of babies. Also, lately mine have stayed closed almost constantly. I think they may be in too much flow but they aren't very pretty closed!

I count about 16 babies.

wow!
I just got a 2 headed dendro maybe a month ago and now it has 1 baby head!
I was excited about that but geez!!!

I was thinking about setting up a pico tank for them and some sun polyps I have so I can feed them to their hearts content and give them their own filtration system (w/ water changes every 3 days probably...)

Good luck! Keep folks posted on their time development/along with your feeding regimen?

Yeah, it's weird. I feed the large heads VERY heavily with frozen cyclopeeze and PE mysis but even though they have gotten bigger, they only have 1-2 baby heads each growing from them.

I dont know why so many babies sprouted from the dead head? I wasn't paying close enough attention to be sure but it seems almost like every little tiny bit of flesh that was left after it died, grew into individual heads. You cant see it in the pic but on the left side of the dead head there are about 8 babies all grouped together in an area about half the size of a dime.

it didnt die! it spawned, i have seen accounts where LPS look like they are dying but its how they reproduce, they die off and for every "nook" in the skeleton produces 1 baby about.

That's definitely possible i suppose. It was weird the way it died. It did get a little slime on the base but not really near the head. I was very surprised that it died but i didnt see any other explanation for it dying off.

I havent had time to try and research it so i have no idea how Dendro's spawn. I just assumed that they would spawn the same as say a sun coral and release a bunch of spores into the water and let them fall as they may:confused:
