20 L display stocking...

DVM in training
So my new setup will be put together in mid august when i move to my new place... hopefully all my LR will be ready by then and ill be set to add to my Bio-Load...

before we get to stocking questions i need to tell everyone the basis of this tank:

i live in a residence hall and im not allowed to have anything over 10 gallons, so i figured my safest bet to breaking that rule (which i enforce by the way... so really it shouldnt matter but it does in case my boss comes to see my tank) is to have a 20 L up top and ill just tell people its a custom sized 10 gallon tank with as large of a fuge as possible underneath to add water volume and therefore stability. For right now its looking like a 20 L up top and a 29 underneath with a small area with LR rubble for the water to drop down into a large fuge with some LR and macro algae and a return section of at least 5 gallons. ill be pumping it back up with a Quiet One 3000 through a SCWD to create alternating current in the tank - with the head loss calculator it comes to about 460 gallons before the SCWD so about 414 after... all in all as little sand as possible in the display (1" or so) and a few inches thick in the fuge and a total of about 70lbs of LR between the display and fuge and return areas.. etc...

Right now i have the 1.5" ocellaris and the 3/4" onyx perc that are going in the 20 L... the peppermint will be banished to the fuge for picking on anything new i put into the tank as he has already killed a carnation coral and 2 BTAs upon introduction by picking the hell out of them, but i love him so he cant go away for good...

as much as i like my "reef" i have realized that corals around here cost too much and locals really only trade SPS so ill probably stick with my forrest of xenia, tonga branch covered in zoos, bunch of mushrooms and let the torch take over one side of the tank because the clowns host it... only coral i would like to add is a red monti cap somewhere near the middle of the display where it will get hit with the alternating current...

so this stocking list is mainly about fish - hence the posting in reef fishes forum...

on top of the two clowns this is what i have been considering:

1 small coral beauty - for sure
1 skunk cleaner - maybe
1 of some sort of sand sifting goby or blennie or something because i hate siphoning sand to keep it clean - definitely needed and recommendations are appreciated
my Fiance likes the royal grammas - so that is a maybe
i am partial to the purple firefish...so that is also a maybe

Now.. seeing as i have all of that water volume the only things i really have to worry about are aggression and overall fish size so id like to get one or two more fish into the display besides the 2 clowns, coral beauty, and sand cleaning fish

You should be maxed out with the 3 or 4 fish you said. I have 3 right now with a shrimp in my 29g tank and I'm putting in one more. I would say no to the skunk clown, yes to the royal grammy, yes ot the sand sifter. Think about a shrimp. Don't get more then one type of clown in such a small tank. The angel will be too big for that tank. This isnt the rules but jsut what I think.

well i already have the two clowns.. they are already pair and have lived well together in my 5.5 for 6 months or so... but its time to upgrade...

I tend to agree with Jeepman3sk on most all points. I think that there is a chance the clowns may show aggression towards eachother as they mature and grow larger. How old are they?

Skunk cleaners are great, i loved mine dearly (RIP).

Blennies are great, personality packed fish.
I have a Bicolor and i adore him.

one is a little over a year old and the other is just under a year... they are paired, believe me.. ive seen all the classic pairing behaviors and they never part ways....

nifty, i wonder if anyone else on the forum has had a clown experience like that.

i wonder iffn' they'll breed ;D

5 or 6 fish in a 20G? Seems way overstocked to me, especially with an Angel in there. A 'small' Coral Beauty will eventually turn into a large one. I had a tail-spot blenny and pair of Hi Fin Gobies when I had my 20, that was it.

Perhaps it would be best to think of it as a nono as far as stocking goes. You may have 59 gallons in your system but only 20 gallons of territory for your fish to divvy up.

tons of mixed clown experiences on these forums...perc and occelaris arent a strange pair... ive seen pictures of maroon and ocellaris mixed young, and bunches of others...

i hope they breed one day....

i know the angel will grow but even at 3-4" which is supposedly max for most pygmy angels hell have plenty of room to swim and places to hide...

so lets reduce this list: the 2 clowns, coral beauty, and "WHAT"

id like it to be something that stirs/cleans the sand so i dont have to... ive thought about a pearly jawfish but they need deep sand and im not a fan of that.... although i suppose i could give him a corner of deeper sand and hope he likes that spot for his burrow...

What about a pistol/goby pair? That pistol gets pretty crazy with stirring substrate. I have one in mine and he does a great job of digging tunnels everywhere! of course you would probably have to add another inch of sand in the display. I keep my pistol with a Orange striped prawn goby. they make a pretty awesome pair.

I think it looks pretty good. You make to think smaller on the angel thoug they get to be about 4 inches and like lots of swimming room.

The clowns should be fine.

Get a sand sifting goby is a good Idea.

here are some nice ones.

I would stick with the smaller variety most reach around 6"

I really like the basslet family. If you like the royal gramma you may also want to consider on of these basslets.

IF you give with this suggestion

2 Clown
1 Sand shifting Goby
1 Basslet

If you have the flitration you can have another for 1 or maybe 2 small fish.

You may want to consider some other gobies. There are some very nice smaller ones you could get a couple of.

I would also suggest any of the clown gobies they come in green, yellow, black, brown, and a few other varieties.

Here a few other I would suggest for you tank that I like.

My coral beauty was 4+ inches and a complete terror. She bullied both my clowns out of their anemone, killed two firefish, and would nip at my Yasha Haze goby whenever he came out. Feel free to put that kind of aggression into a 20G. If you are set on an angel though, consider a cherub as they max out at just a few inches.

ok... well if the CB has that many problems and actually IS one of the larger pygmy angels then what about a flame back, or a rusty, or a half black angel?

i am fixed on an angel and the only one i dont want is a flame angel because.... well because i dont...

I have a 25g tall with 2 clowns, 6line wrasse, gramma, cherub angel, neon goby and hector's goby also a skunk cleaner and various snails and clean-up crew. I do weekly water changes and run a skimmer with a 15 gal sump. So far so good and moving to a 72 in a couple months. Just make sure you add them slowly and keep them in QT for 4-6 weeks beforehand. I lost my last stock to ich.

I had a 20l with a pair of occelaris, a Coral Beauty, a Bangai cardinal, and a couple of small gobies. No problems whatsoever.
