All,

Many have asked to see my tank before but with two kids i just haven't been able to do much. I also used my black berry to record but will have better video next time. The other issue is that for the longest time I had been fighting a rare parasite that I finally seem to have under control.
The tank is 17ft long, 6 feet wide and 3 feet high. There is a 300 gal sump and a 650 gal refugium that has a deep sand bed and 2000 lbs of live rock. It has two H&S skimmers with 8 ehime pumps. It has two 150 watt emperor aquatic sterelizers and two ozonizers. I added the UV and ozone three months ago and it seems to have made a huge difference for me.

I have a lot of angels and tangs. The largest tang is a unicorn that is about 2 feet. The largest angel is a Chrismas Island orange tail emperor that is a little over a foot. Sorry the tank is not very pretty yet but I am working on it slowly.

I could not load the video so I uploaded in Youtube.

thanks

Looks great

Can you elaborate on what the addition of the UV and ozone did for you tank? Contemplating if i should add either or both on my system

Ahh amazing !

a couple of LED strips would really bring it to life as well Id say.

but I know to cover that huge area ... lol

Now that I have figured out how to upload, I will take a video of my sump room later today. About the UV and Ozone, I know a lot of people here believe they don't do much for parasites and on a detailed level I agree with them. However, I have been keeping fish for 20 plus years and it seems when ever I have had UV on a system, the rate of infection has been low. I do not believe they do anything for the parasites on the fish but here is what I believe:

I think the concentration of parasites in a fish tank is un-natural. In the wid there are parasites as well and I think the fish's immune system along with the low concentration help them fight off the parasites. ozone helps to clarify the water which means more clear water and thus better UV penetration. I think they are complementary. The UV keeps the population of bacteria and parasites low and so the fish's immune system can fight off better what is still in the water. This would not work for a disease outbreak but I think it works for the normal times and prevents an outbreak. Atleast, I have always had good luck with them and in the begining of the year when I decided not to use them I got in trouble. I QT all my fish and all my fish are from DD but even with that it is possible to get in trouble as I did. There are no garuntees in our hobby.

I moved to Anchorage two years ago, before that I had kept 30 fish alive in a thousand gallon tank for 15 years. I used a 160W UV by rainbow for that entire time and never had a problem. One of the other keys is to not keep adding fish after you have the collection you want. If you hold the population steady everything seems to be in equilibrium. Now that I have a bigger system I went with emeror aquatics two 150W model. Only two bulbs to change since they have the HO model versus eight I would have to with the rainbow. Emperor makes a great model.

I highy recomend ozone an UV for FOWLR tanks. I don't think they are a great idea for a reef. The ozonizers I have are the new 250 ml/hr model O3 (plates) and a 500 mg/hr clearwater model that uses UV lamp.

One of my good friends was fighting all kinds of parasites for a long time and then decided to get an oversized UV, he too has not had issues since then. This is just my expirence with it but others I am sure have different ideas. The key is a large enough model with a low enough flow rate i think.

By the way, I will take another better video today with a better camera. The tank is lighted exclusively by LEDs totalling less than 500W. I love the cool operating temp and the shimmering effect and the fact I don't have to replace a lot of bulbs for a few years.

You said you like in Anchorage right? Anchorage, Alaska? Who built your tank? The largest one I was aware of in AK is around 500, but this tops it! Amazing!!

Yea I live in Anchorage Alaska. I used to live in Fairbank before and had a 1000 gal tank. This one is 2000 and made by ATM. When I movd here I had it made and built the basement of the house to have a design that would accomodate the tank and sump room.

I love Angels and tangs so wanted a tank that could accomodate a few of them. So far no fighting but who knows how it will work out when the fish get bigger. I have 30 fish. The rule for me is 6 inches of tank length per fish for a 6 foot deep tank. However because some of these fish will get large I have a 600 gal refugium and 300 gal sump to go with it. I have space for four more and I am not sure what i will get but I want them to be small. I have been thinking about four fairy wrasses. But I am not sure.

I had a lot more Live Rock in the tank before but I like having fewer live rock in the main tank and more in the sump so I can see the fish better.

All the fish eat from my hand. The unicorm and emperor are co bosses of the tank.
