I just hope I don't have too many. When I had the thousand, I had 18 fish that lived for 13 years till I moved. I guess I could move some to the 600 refugium but I don't want to since that is in the sump room.

I love that tank. Awesome. Would cost me a divorce to do that.

I have to ask you about water changes. How many gallons and how often? You must be buying salt by the truckload.

I do about 200 Gal every two weeks. Once I get more calurpa and sponges going on the refugium I think I will change that to every three weeks. The Ozone and giant skimmers seem to keep the water very clean. I guess I figure if you don't have a reef and are not in need of trace elements and your nitrate and phosphate are low then you don't need as much of a change.

I usually wait for a sale and then buy about 25 buckets.

One of the things I found that help me keep the tank clean is a lot of water flow in wave and pulse mode in addition to a bare bottom tank. I also change the filter socks every other day. There is never any food or poop that lingers in the tank long.

I feed about four to five times a day but make sure the food is gone in two minutes or less. usually it is gone in 30 seconds. The good thing is that the tank has a lot of algea for the tangs and even the angels to graze on. Also believe it or not when a large fish poops there is a feeding frenzy. A whole sheet of nori lasts about 20 seconds in that tank.

The water stays exceptionally clear. As a matter of fact per the ORP probe it is in the high 390s but that is subjective.

I had a long battle with a rare parasite and I spent over two thousand dollars on drugs and could not get rid of it. Believe me when I tell you i buy from the best place (DD) and QT for four weeks. Even through all that someting like a fluke but not one that responds to prazi got in. I fought it to the point of almost giving up. As a last resort I tried a total of 460W UV, 750 mg/hr Ozone and metronidazole in the feed once a week. I have not seen a sign of that parasite in a while (couple of months) but it does not mean it is gone. Have my fingers crossed

the parasite would only attack fish with large scales, only in a few places and looked like a little tiny worm that would leave a wound. It was not an instant killer but I could tell the fish were not happy. I have a library of fish books, over 100 of them including Noga's and a high powered microscope but I was not competent enough to really figure out what this thing was.

Before this, having had fish for over a decade without an illness I was not emotionally prepared. My wife certainly was not prepared for me to deal with what i had to do (get all rocks out, catch fish in such a large tank and find QT for all of them all over the house with two little kids). That was a huge project on its own. Hopefully that is behind me.

thakfully through the whole ordeal wich lasted about a year (very long) I only lost a couple of large fish and some small fish (four chromis and two fairy wrasses). At one point I thought i would loose them all but taking them into QT, doing a water change (small) everyday where I was syphoning water from the bottom of the tank (using a mag 350) performed miracles. All fish for the last couple of months have been eating like food was going out of style, the fins look good and everyone comes to greet who ever walks by the tank so I think atleast the issue is under control. I have not seen any signs laterly but that does not mean it is gone. I am obsessive about checking out my fish.

About the cost, if I had to start from scratch I would never have done it because the cost is more than two very good new SUVs. I added over the years and when I moved my company helped offset the cost of the new tank which was like buying a small car.

Most of my pumps are Tunze and Roger is the best sales rep in the world so I enjoy working with him.

Now that I have two young kids, the buying spress has stopped. I just try to maintain what I have. It is also a reason i did not go reef. I don't have the time or energy and the wife does not like how much time I spend on the fish.

the queen is 8-9 inches. Funny thing about the queen is that before QT he was at a higher pecking order than the french. After six months apart, the french grew faster and now is higher up.

I love your tank! I just showed it to my wife, she loves your tank! So many different fish! This is great.
However, we were both wondering why you don't have much live rock, or rockscapes?

Why did you go 6ft wide? I would think 3ft is fine, 4ft if you like wide tanks, but 6ft seems overkill. Do the fish even use all 6ft? I would think the fish would be fine in a 17ft x 3ft x 3ft tank, plus it would have been cheaper, but whats done is done.

Also have you checked out the local saltwater forum?

I used to have a lot of rock and then I had to catch the fish for treatment. It was a pain getting it ll out. So for now I am going with open space till I am in the clear for six months. I also have started to like the open feel. I can see all the fish easily. The system though has about 2500 lbs of rock most of which is in the refugium and sump.

I like wide tanks because they allow you to keeo more fish (larger surface area). Also, someday when I decide to do better aquaspacing it is possible to have interesting structures. Finally it is easier for fish to stay out of the way of the bullies.

But I do agree it is much easier to take care of a narrower tank.

Looks great. I live in Anchorage too, well, Eagle River. I've got a good camera, I'd love to come by someday and take some good pictures and video for you.

Recty takes great pics, you can't pass up his offer lol. I'd also love to stop by, i live in Wasilla but it don't mind the hour drive. :)

By chance is your name Ali?

Thanks for the offer. Would be happy to set up some time to show the tank. I do have a proffesional photographer friend but my wife makes the decisions on photos and fish are low on the totem pole.

My name is not Ali but I know who he is. i met him a few months ago and have gotten to be good friends. He has some amazing fish. I have talked him into getting a large UV as well. He has a lot of fish some very expensieve like a gem tang, black tang and conspicuous angel. It is crazy not having the insurence of the best water you can have for them.

After seeing my tank he has been thiking about getting a 2000 gal tank as well and might at some point if he can make the dimensions work.

how thick is your acrylic? how long has the tank been running? do you think you will have to buff any of the scratches out anytime soon?

have you thought about an achilles tang?

i'm considering getting an 84x33x28" 3/4-1" acrylic. from the info i've been gathering from posters with big tanks, 3/4" is more than adequate for me.

The tank is 1.5" thick. It has to be because of the width. There are no scratches that I am aware of. if you see something it is dust or wires hanging out off the back. As far as buffing goes, I had an acrylic tank for 13 years (1000 gal) that was still in great shape when I took it down. I think having a bare bottom helps.

however, i also had a 600 gal reef tank (my current refugium) that got scratched all over because the sand sometimes got under my cleaner but more because of coraline aglea.
