20g tank pics - first time saltwater setup

Hey guys,

I just finished setting up my 20 gallon tank. It has a purple long tentacled anemone, hammer coral, green polyps, red mushrooms, cleaner shrimp, 2 false perc clownfish. I've taken some lfs advice mixed with stuff I have learned from here on the care of the various corals. They told me the hammer coral is infact a filter feeder and does not utilize photosynthesis. The polyps are supposed to be the opposite and only require light to survive. Is that correct (ive read otherwise on the hammer)? The anemone went in this afternoon and has since unballed himself and moved around slightly. Do the anemones ever open entirely flat (meaning you cant see their foot/bottom..just tentacles)? He is lying on the sand poking out between the rocks. The fish man said that feeding is only necessary maybe 3 times a year. I've heard people feeding them once a week. Currently, the only food I have at the house is frozen reef formula. Will that be ok for the anemone? The fish guy suggested shrimp from the grocery store, but I have read silversides would be good. Finally, the clownfish are omnivourous so I thought the reef formula would work for them, but once again the fish man suggested pellet food instead.
Right now the clownfish are swimming against the glass and dont seem to care about anything but their reflection, hopefully that will change. I've seen tank pics where the density of coral was much greater than what I have at the moment. I dont understand how people cram them in that tight. Anyway, here's a pic.

By the way, is it normal for the corals to rectract up and look pretty pathetic at night? They have been doing it the past few days and still opening all majestic like during the day..but in the evenings it concerns me.

yes the corals do tht cuz the light is off and they dont have the need to spread out if there is no light. they need light to live. when there is light they spread out to get as much as they can. tank looks good for a first start

How long has the tank been running?

As for the hammer, it does photosynthisize, and it probably would like meatier food than just being allowed to 'filter feed'

The polyps will be fine on just light - I haven't heard anybody even say they've seen them take food.

Feeding an anemone only three times a year is probably way to little. How's its color at this point? Sometimes they're bleached when people get them home and require more care. They're also known to require rather intense light.

At this point, if I were you, I'd start taking anything this fish guy tells me with a cow-lick sized grain of salt - I don't know much and I'm pretty sure he's wrong on two of the three points you brought up.

Look at the Anemone and LPS forums here for advice on caring for the LTA and Hammer, respectively. The Hammer will be pretty much like frogspawn and torch corals (they're all in the same genus, and are very similar) - there've been a few threads on those lately.
