240 Gallon peninsula powerhead placement question

I have a 240 gallon aquarium that I just moved into the house and finishing up the plumbing this week (or hope to anyway). I have two 1" returns that I am going to connect up to Sea Swirls. I also have one XF250 series Gyre to use. My question is regarding placement of the returns and Sea Swirls and the Gyre.

I was thinking of placing the Gyre in the middle of the tank, back wall across from the main viewing pane. Position the Sea Swirls opposite corners far upper left and lower right. Visually on the image below I think I'll get pretty good coverage of the tank. Another option would be to put both Sea Swirls closer to the over flow / return and place the Gyre on the other end of the tank.

Any thoughts or does it really matter?

Sounds good. It looks like you will be doing surface skimming ( external overflow) . Just make sure you dont point any of your flow straight at the overflow. It would be a waste. If you run into an issue you can always point the sea swirls downward at an angle with use of a 45 degree elbow.

@lapin - thanks. Good point about the direction back to the overflow. I'll be able to test everything before I aquascape so thanks for the tip. I believe I can adjust the Sea Swirls a bit with their direction and degree / sweep coverage. So I think I can get it right.

Thanks again.

Where did you get your tank?

Concept Aquariums, Calgary Canada. They built the tank and the stand. Shipped it to my door in Sacramento, Ca. 5 or so week lead time. I don't remember exactly since I was not in a rush. Shipping cost wasn't bad but it is cheaper if you can drop it off at a business with a loading dock. Low iron main glass pane with one side that is visible. Back of the tank and overflow side is regular but they put a black film on it. Can be removed later if I want but since I do not plan on it being seen I'll leave it. Extremely well packed. Zero movement in the crate. Overall I'm pretty happy with the tank, price, and shipping. I also had them build a stand out of 2" steel.

One minor complaint is that I wanted a smooth weir on the overflow which they did document. When I received it, it was notched. I can smooth it out on my own or leave it. One other small thing is the Euro brace. It is made out of scrap and/or left over glass which is perfectly fine. However, it isn't has smooth or buffered like the rest of the tank edges. Again, not a big deal since I will have a canopy covering it anyway but I'm a bit surprised they didn't catch it.

Few people here have tanks from them that I exchanged messages with regarding build, leaks, etc. Their tanks have been doing great so I pulled the trigger on this. I was going to go with Miracle's originally, and may regret it later, but this was a great deal. Time will tell and the money I saved went to other accessories and college tuitions - lol. If you are looking for something give them a call, ask for Matt, and see what they can do. Couple difference price points won't hurt. Professional, friendly, and responsive to email questions.

Edit: Not a great picture of the tank, will try to get another tomorrow morning, but you can sort of see the depth and height. I was testing a pair of LED's for spread / cover area. I'll be adding another two and I think it will be enough.

Edit 2: Overflow area. Outer pipes are returns feeding to a pair of Sea Swirls. They are 1" pipe. Inner 3 are Bean Animal using 1" inside the overflow due to space attached to 1 1/2" bulk heads to a sump. Pretty basic but it is dead silent once I set it up properly.

Sounds like a good plan. I use less flow personally.

I have no idea what the flow will actually be once everything is in there if truth be told. I am testing a Jebao DCT 15000 return pump while everything cycles so have room to adjust. My current tank, the 40 breeder, is mostly soft corals with rose bubble tip anenomes and 4 LPS/Hammers that are pretty large. Working on the canopy and sump area now so maybe water and rock after the 1st.

Edit: Plan for return pump was to use Neptune's when available or maybe a Vectra. In any case I agree with flow so trying to use a DC for adjustability. I guess we'll see how it works out.
