240G set up

I have had a few tanks in the past but I have been out of the game for 2+ years. Wanted to see what all has changed or what all you would recommend for what I am doing. Like the title says I am thinking of setting up a 240g. Now for the livestock I am not 100% of what I am doing. Looking for info on everything but lighting atm. Thinking of either a euroreef or ASM skimmer, Think it has a 30-40g sump as of now but found a killer deal on a 80g tank that I think I am going to make the sump out of. Also thinking of Running a Apex controller if this makes any difference at all. Now I am looking to not go to crazy on this, as I am prob going to look for used things as I am good at finding deals. Let me know what you all think!

Sounding good! A 240 g is great. Just besure you take it slow. Big tanks seem to sablize slower.

As for the apex, I got one myself and love it. One of my best investments. If you don't have one already, I would invest in an ATO. They make life so much easier :-D I got my original one from autotopoff.com (double float). Great unit and recommended by many I know. I'd be using it still if I didn;t get my new one with the Elos.

Thought the 80g was a better idea, I am picking this tank up on Wed more then likely. Looking to piece it together slowly to give me time to decide on what to put in it... REALLY want to do a reef but the rock prices are gonna kill me... What skimmer would you all recommend?
This is what I have so far:
240g Acrylic tank w/ stand and canopy
x2 300w heaters
x2 Compact Florescent Ballasts that drive 2 bulbs (prob gonna change)
80G tank (in process of making sump)
System pump (not to sure on the ratings tho or what it is)

Here is some pics (glass looks way worse then it really is)

Looks like you are off to a busy start! Glad you are going to take it slowly.
As for rock prices, you can save a TON by not getting a bunch of live rock. Get mainly dry rock and seed from another tank. It will take a bit longer to mature, but there is a lower chance of pests and it is way cheaper.

I got a bunch of nice dry rock Marco Rock when they were at an event. You can get it online too at good rates with free shipping

If you want to go with coral, you'll definately want to reconsider your lights. Nothing photosynthetic will live with 2 power compact bulbs. You don't need to go super crazy with light for some of the corals, but you will need an upgrade. It doesn't have to break the bank either. Let me know if you want to upgrade your lighting to allow for coral and I can help with some suggestions.
Likewise, you can always go with a non-photosynthetic tank, but that takes a lot of effort and feed.

If you decide on a FOWLR tank and think you want coral at some point, just be careful on fish selection :)

enjoy!

Well the tank will run 4 Pc lights, looking to see if I can DIY the ballasts to run T5's but not sure yet. Seriously considering a DIY LED setup, Little on the wow side to buy them since they can be made cheap. I am in no hurry to set up this tank as I want to do it right, so your rock idea was something I was considering so its not to pricey. I have always had FOWLR aggressive tanks and one 20g Long reef and I am really thinking Reef for this one after seeing it today. Now to find a skimmer thats not gonna kill me in price and will handle this tank..

I know someone who might have a skimmer that would work and send him your way if so :)

DIY LED is not cheap. Trust me. Long term it will be cheaper but there is a steep investment. I've done many LED projects to know :)

T5's are only as good as their reflectors, so get good ones.
THere are nice T5 kits/parts at reefgeek.com

I checked and I'm afraid my friends skimmer is too small for you.
Keep an eye on RC's for sale section. Lots of good deals for those who can still spend money.

Ya I made a LED system for my 135 I had and I spent about 1k on it so I know its not cheap but I know in the long run it will pay for it self over and over. I am looking at an ASN G4x rated for 400g I think.. Little under 400 not to bad but then again my apex is gonna be 500 so o well... Wont skimp on some stuff, thinking 180# or rock might do it as a friend of mine had his running for years with that amount but then again who knows I might go with more depending on the deal I find.

Also cant get to for sale sections due to not having 50 posts... gay
