29g Setup help

Hello everyone,

This is not my first setup but is my first glass tank. Trying to keep this new project cheap. I was wondering what the depth of the Aquaclear filter tube should be as well as placement of the heater?

I also have two 425 power heads coming. How should they be pointed?

I would rotate the heater 90 degrees and put it on the far left. Take the second uplift tube off and then place the HOB filter right next to the heater. You want the uplift tube to be about a half inch from the heater for maximum efficiency. I'd place the powerheads up top at opposite ends of the tank facing each other. If you ever want to change up the flow a little just swivel the pump to the left or the right.

Take a look at my tank build thread in my signature. It's a 29g glass also. I would use only one of the tube extensions, add a surface skimmer that hooks up to the aquaclear. Move filter towards left side. Heater vertical near middle of back tank, just at/under water line and the 425s on each side panels. But only you will know where you need more flow one tank it loaded with rock/ decoration, and if you plan as reef down the road. I had two 240s. My 2x 425 should be here within 12 hours, there are on the hydor timer. Pretty sure you have checked, but the heater is submersible? Lol.

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for the info! I was trying to hide the heater as much as possible. I don't want to do a sump right now. I ended up buying a orbit ic light and power head combo. So I placed the power head opposite the filter and left the heater were it was. When I get another power head I will re arrange.

what are you planning on keeping? Without a protein skimmer or algae scrubber it will be very difficult (and a lot of maintenance) to keep the tank algae free, unless you plan on only keeping fish and soft corals (and don't mind algae).

Fish and start off with some basic corals. I will add a protein skimmer. Possibly today.

I figured I would wait until the tank is more established before doing anything like that

I am doing 3g water changes weekly right now. Haha it's only been a week so success so far. Been using aquavitro seed but no readings on ammonia nitrite or nitrate yet. Went ahead and put about 8 young margarita snails in they seem happy no one has tried to escape yet

I would see if you can find someone to hold onto those snails until you can get the tank cycled. If there are essentially no nutrients in the tank, that means no film algae and nothing for the snails to eat.

You need to dose pure ammonia or fish food or something nitrogenous to get the cycle going (and you don't want snails in there while the tank is cycling, as ammonia is toxic to them)
