30G cube drillable?

I've seen pics with the back drilled. But is the bottom drillable?

i'm setting up a 40 gallon cube and it has 5 holes in the bottom of the tank. one overflow, one return and 3 for a closed loop.

why not go for it

if you are talking about the oceaniac 30g cube, the bottom is tempered, so you will probably want to take it to a glass shop if you want it drilled.

thanks for the info aural - btw glass shops aren't usually the best places to go, had one guy who use to work at one and he said they broke glass all the time cuz they used crappy equipment and bits

check it out, i just started a thread with the new tank. the guy that had it before me had the three holes in the bottom that i'm using for a closed loop as the returns from the sump. i think he was smoking something by doing that without a check valve.

I asked about a 30G cube particularly to see if they might crack.

30 gallon oceanic cubes are tempered on the bottom and cannot be drilled AT ALL regardless of where you take it or who you think can drill it.

Yes, the tempered glass will explode if you try to drill it, much like a car windsheild. The outer glass is crystalized while the inside glass is under pressure and wants to expand. Tempered glass is stronger, but more brittle. It WILL shatter. You could have your own piece cut and drilled, then sent out to be tempered and replace the bottom. It's a lot of work but not that expensive.. maybe $60.

I had 2 30 gallon Oceanic tanks that I drilled holes in the bottom of each with no problems. I also drilled an oceanic 75 gallon on the back and bottom without problems.
I used a dremel tool with two different diamond tipped bits from Sears that cost $5.00

I used to have an Oceanic 30g, and I contacted them directly to ask them if I could drill it. They said No way, tempered glass.

i called them and they told me it was tempered also...i guess the question is, how was shookbrad able to drill his?

maybe they changed from non tempered to tempered at some point?

I doubt they changed, most tanks have tempered bottums. You might as well forget about drilling the bottum, its not gonna happen with tempered glass, it will just crack. Drill the back of the tank, run some small pvc on the bottum and cover it with sand.

i know all about tempered glass, i use to build custom tanks in my past. i just find it funny that he claims he has a 30 gallon cube and he was able to drill it with a $5 bit, or even drill it at all. maybe he has a 30 cube that was made by someone else.

I find it funny as well. I showed this thread to my dad, Hes the head of quality controll for a PPG glass factory. He got a good laugh out of it.
