I'm converting my freshwater to saltwater; however, I want to know what type of filtration I should invest in. Knowing full well I have a 35 Gallon Hexagon aquarium. Do I need a regular filter, or do i need a protein skimmer or both. Need help, any advise?

Hey Now,

I would invest in a good protein skimmer. If you have a substantial amount of live rock...1-2 pounds per gallon and a protein skimmer you will not need any other filtration. I would rinse out your freshwater mechanical filter and run that with carbon only.
I highly suggest you purchase the new marine aquarium by mike palletta or reef invertebrates by calfo and fenner. You will learn about live rock filtration.
Good luck!!

It really depends on the type of saltwater aquarium you are planning on having. If you plan on a reef or fowlr, then, in most instances you don't need any other outside filtration, except for a protein skimmer. The live rock and sand becomes your bacteria filter. I guess you can do without the protein skimmer, but most people will advise you to use one. I would and do.

You can run a power filter if you want to, but you don't really have to. I don't have one (at least, I can't find it and I wanted to use it today-changed some water and stirred up stuff). If you do use one, be sure to clean the filter every two-three days. If you want to use chemicals/carbon, etc, then having one around might be a good idea.

Hey, good luck.

I would run your mechanical filter during the cycling process and especially whenever you put your live rock in. It helps trap a lot of the stuff blowing around. You just have to clean the filter pad out or change it very often, which isnt too practical in the long run. Skimmers are the new technology when it comes to filtering, because it actually removes the organics from the water column before they have a chance to break down.

A skimmer will do a much better job when it has a consistant water level. I would really look into investing in a sump of any type.

eddie i am getting ready to order some more base rock from
http://www.reeferrocks.com/baserock/index.htm

if you want we get go in on it and split the cost sense you only live down the street from me in your 35 gal tank you will only need like 15 lb of base and 15 lb of live. it helps on saving the cost of just getting live rock. and when you get the live rock is will turn the base rock into live rock.

but like i said i i'm going to order sokme this week and we can just make it one order. they will email mail us a pic of the rock we will be getting.
