4 yr old wants a seahorse tank of his own!

You'd probably need a chiller, yes. Check seahorse.com for the temperature range for the type of SH you are going to get. I chose Erectus, mainly because they're availalbe CB, will eat frozen, and can be kept at the highest temp range. My problem (which may be yours, too) is to find a chiller option for a small tank! Right now, mine is doing ok with fans and a wall AC unit.

I don't know what you are all talking about with this 4 year old business. My 4 year old daughter is a big part of not only the 29 gallon SH tank but also my reef. The last year she has been a big part of all maintaince. She can even dose things like Prodibio and all the other things I put in my tank. In fact she added the salt to thank to mix the water. I have to help with correct salinity readings only because she isn't able to read the refractometer. Last night I let HER perform a battery of test on the water in her tank. She likes doing because she gets to count out loud. I am not trying to give any parental lessons but I have never had a problem with her. If one of her freinds even thought about putting ANYTHING into the tanks she give a 5 minute lecture about how that could disrupt the bacteria cycle or possiably even poison the fish...Shes gotten so good we are thinking about letting her setup a system at her daycare (with help ofcourse). Maybe giving kids responsability at young age doesn't work for everyone but I have found by making her work to maintain something she tends to be more protective of her work.

As for Maintaining proper temps I have had good luck with a inlet/outlet style fan array that I have in my hood. When temps get to 76 degress the fans come on. I also am running a data logger for the temp and have thus far not seen a temp above 79, mind thi system has only been up for a month. If you still want to get a chiller the smallest one I have seen is a 1/15 hp unit that goes for about $300. IMO I would try to go without the chiller while you cycled the tank and just check temps as often as you can. If the temps seems to be a problem then look into a chiller.

I would NOT recomend a 12 gallon Dwarf tank. It is too big unless you plan on housing at least 15-17 horses. The reason being is that dwarfs need a certain feeding density of BBS in order to get enough to eat. If you dont have enough horses, most of that food goes uneaten poluting your tank. I personaly woud not get a tank bigger than 10 gallons for dwarfs. I have a 5 gallon tank that I keep dwarfs in. If you want the nano cube, I would recomend the 6 gallon model. And live rock or live sand is a BIG NO NO! Dwarfs grow to a max of 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Live rock and sand can house seemingly harmless organisms that may inflict massive injury on your little dwarf ponies.
