$40 Fans

What is up with the $30-40 fans cooling fans? Can't you just buy a $6 computer fan for substitution instead? I can't imagine it performing significantly worse.

those $6 computer fans are 6-12v DC. you will need a power supply for them. can be done and has been done. but if you plug in a DC fan straight to the wall. do it in a well ventilated area! :D

if your talking about the IC variable speed fans....

they have a probe that goes in the canopy, and depending on how warm the canopy is will effect the speed of the fan...

the hotter the water, the faster the fan spins.

If you dont want/need that, yes a computer box fan is the way to go, but as stated you will a transformer ac adaptor...or keep a fire extuinguisher handy:)

I use the Icecap fans with the probe. I don't think you put the probe in the water. Icecap said to keep it near the bulbs. I have my probe just above the bulb taped to the socket.

I love the IC fans they are sooooooo quite my wife can't even hear them ;) and they push a heck of a lot of air. I could not be happier.

that icecap probe on the fans is not for the water. The regular fans you refer to are also loud. You can hook up a reostat or light dimmer and slow them down to quiet, but they will not last as long.

Radio Shack carries some fans that look exactly like computer fans but they run on 120 AC. I use these by my lights and they work great.... about $20 if I remember correctly

From IceCap:
Those same 120V RS fans were my inspiration to find a way to end the buy, install, remove, toss, and then repeat cycle every year or two. We offer smart fans made for a caustic environment.

As to the probe, it's for the air temperature, not water. By moving the probe's placement higher or lower to the water, you can fine tune your fan's speed.

The $3 computer fans work just fine on almost any old cell phone charger that you have laying around, 12v usually works best, the Power suppies are only a few bucks if you don't have one. If you get a good one and don't over power it, they are quiet as can be.

As for them not lasting very long, they really are designed to be replaced every couple of years.
