I was thinking instead of putting 2 250w bulbs maybe doing 1 400w on an automated rail system that moves the bulb back and forth. Any thoughts?

I dont see why it would not work as long as it gives enogh light over the whole tank it should work.

Ive got 2X250's over a 40 breeder . You are not going to hurt anything in a 90 with a 400 watter .... Rail systems work well...

Well I was worried about not providing enough light :D

How do you make automatic rail system?

I want to make a huge tank in near the future (over 2000G) but don't want to run 6000 w of light. Instead I am thinking about doing the same with you, to have a automatic rail to shift the light from back to front slowly and lit the tank over 12 - 14 hours.

How do you plan on making the rail system?

You can get light rails to move a single light back and forth along the length of the tank. I'm considering doing this on my new setup. With 6 t-5s 3 in front and 3 in back and a single 400 watt halide on a rail in the center of the hood .....

U can buy them from hydroponics stores or http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=13974&N=2004+113356

Why they sell it in pieces like that I have no idea.

Ha, very cool.
Are there other companies making similar products?
I am trying to move 7X400W lamps together along the width of the tank (150cm) and I am hoping to accomplish that with 2 motors at maximum.

My plan is to build a 5m X 1.5m X 1m (H) tank and only run 7 X 400W only but move them back and forth in the interval of 6 hours.
