40g breader as a refuge/frag tank

Hello everyone! Going to venture into new territory and add to my 95-wave tank. My wife bought me the tank, stand, and mega-flow sump about 2 years ago. Although she got pretty ripped off(2k from C*****y C******s), I'm very happy with what is has become. There's space in my basement entertainment room in the corner for a nice 300 or 400 gallon but I can't find a great price on a tank now will the wife allow that kinda commitment. SO, I converted the mega-flow into a refugium with a dsb and macro. However, the flow is making it hard for the sand and macro to stay put and my tank has very small debris in the main display.

Here's my plan: I have a 40g undrilled breeder sitting around with a fairly similar tv stand nearly matching the style on my 95 wave stand. I want this tank to be a refugium/frag tank. About 12-14inches will be for the macro. Eggcrate will separate the other side of the tank for the frag rack and maybe a mandarin goby(my wife absolutely adors them). I just bought a couple 1 1/2" diamond drill bits on ebay for about 10 bucks apiece including shipping. I wanna drill 2 holes, one for the intake and 1 for drainage. I have a pair of bulkheads that came with a flange and cap to keep large particles out. However, I'm not positive on the size of these bulkheads. 3/4" pvc fits IN either side of the holes. The size of the hole I need to drill is about 1 1/4" for the bulk head to fit through the glass, including the threads. Are these 1" bulkheads?

Anyways, the megaflow sump came with a mag 9.5 with 2 outlets. I will use the 2nd outlet that's been closed for this whole time to feed the frag tank/refugium. I will clean out the megaflow so I can use the tray that catches the water from the overflow and put some filter pads like it was originally intended.

A couple of questions. Will a mag 9.5 be enough to make 2 returns(1 to my main display 1 to my 40g) okay for this concept? I'm planning on a DSB in the 40g for additional filtering along with the macro.

I was considering using live rock rubble in the megaflow for additional filtering. Will the rock accumulate detrius and just put more debris back into my main display?

I just bought a Nova Extreme T5HO from Aquahut today for 230 bucks. It's the 4 bulb system. 2 6700k and 2 18k. Will this be adequate for sps? I wish I asked before the impulse buy but the wife was in a giving mood so I had to jump on the rare oppourtunity.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I check these boards religiously several times a day. I can't make the meetings because I work fridays and saturdays. But I feel like i know most of you guys already!

If your thinking about a 300..give Pierce (Cali-Reef) a PM
heres the tank ...

I'm using a 40 also for a fuge/mini frag tank it has a DSB and some rubble rock.. it works out well. A 9.5 should be enough depending on the head pressure back to the main tank. IMO it isn't necessary to have rubble in the megaflow for the reason you mentioned, detris acumulation because between the macro in the fuge,DSB and rock in the main tank there should enough filtration, but it depends on your bioload as well as your husbandry......

I took a look at his post, showed it to the wife, wife gives me the crooked eyebrow. Anyways, thanks for the input. Anyone else have any suggestions or warnings on my plan? I think I'll just do a DSB in the megaflow.

I'd love it. But I don't think it would put out enough heat. Why would I want more heat, you might ask? Cuz the wife would make a bed in the garage if I spent more money! Thanks though. 8)
