48" tall reef

I think I've settled my tank upgrade on a 325 gallon 60"x25"x48".

I know everyone is saying that a 48" deep reef will be difficult to work with for anyone less than 11 feet tall, and that lighting will be a big issue.

I plan to do leather corals, with tall, open rock structure. I really want something dramatic, but not the usual "2000 watt + SPS reef" or the "Lets see how many angels/tangs/triggers can fit without any corals" reef.

Any advice for fish?

A LFS nearby has two 6 or 7 foot tall tanks. They both sit on the floor and are taller than me so I say either 6 or 7. One of them is a reef and the other is fish only. The reef is comprised of pretty simple corals. Mushrooms, a leather, etc. It has a few anthias, a couple clowns, and some cardinal fish. There might be one tang, I'd have to see it again. It's the coolest tank though. Just standing next to a column of reef with fish swimming from your feet up above your head. It's a good choice if you can manage the maintenance.

To be honest, I don't see the maintenance being that bad. All the equipment except 1 or 2 Tunze's will be in the basement and my tank looks better the less my hands are in it. The only real probably will be scraping the coralline.

good luck with that tall of a tank hope it works for you.. i almost bought a 48x24x48 but i ent with a 48x24x36 an thank god because it is a real pain to work in an aquascape. i have only 18in about the tank to work with and that adds to my problem.. post pics of that bad boy so i can see what i am missing

that would be really cool. but I think it would be a PITA to aquascape, and clean the coralline, like you said.

aquascaping initially should be ok. I think its only if you change your mind (like we all do) that will be a PITA. For cleaning the panels youre just gonna have to buck up and fork over the $200 for a Magnavore, and clean it daily, so coraline doesnt have the chance to build up.

Since you said youre going leathers, and what not, why not some fish that dont swim too much. Ones that will rest on the leathers. Like some Gobies, blennies, hawkfish, then some clowns to host the leathers. Then Id get some tangs, just because you can lol.

the main issue i see is stacking the rock... my tank is 30" and i ordered "show" rocks... once you get 2-3 rocks high, stability drops. of course you can counter this with PVC/hole drilling... but I like living on the edge (and not seeing any pvc in my tank)

GL! this should be a good thread!

Your tank needs to be bigger front to back. 25" is not nearly enough for that tall of a tank. You should add 6"-12" so that you have more aquascaping options. The increase in the cost of the tank won't be that dramatic, and all of the same equipment can be used to run the tank. Don't waste your time and money on such a tall skinny tank.

If you are going to get a tank that deep, I would highly suggest getting a much wider tank too...at least 36" wide, because when you are setting up, you are going to have to get in the tank, I really dont see any other way you are going to be able to place rock on the bottom and attach corals to the rocks at the bottom.

I have a 48 inch tall tank now.

The demonsions are 96*30*48

It is really nice. Make sure you have a ton of flow so you are not constantly cleaning.

Thats nuts...my tank is really clean almost 24/7 and there is no way I could handle a 48" tall tank...I have a hard enough time with a 32"...Good luck though! I bet it would look badass.

I would love to see that!!!

My tank is 40" high and its very difficult to maintain.

I also agree that 24 is way to narrow for a tank that height. I just cant see how you would stack the rock in a way that was not completely unnatural. IMHO. You are also going to need to be able to fit your actual body in a tank that deep so 24 inches might also be a problem.
