Hello there, this might be my first post here on RC.
I figure this is a good place to start talking about my experience in the hobby; maybe gain some understanding along the way.
I've been at it for three years and am recovering from my first big crash. I lost all my fish but my sailfin tang (I call him Survivor over the protest of my three year old who insists on Christmas Tree).
Anyway, I lost quite a few coral, nearly all my crustaceans (just a very few hermits remain), and most of my snails. I dove into my recovery before the algae was completely out of control and think I've stabilized enough to start adding back.
Here are a few photos of where I stand and what's going on :
The palys on left are pretty old, among the first coral I put in there, they're still a bit shut up most of the time. I got the purple fan thing in the first year too and I can see some polyps here and there; I pulled off a bunch of Cyano yesterday.
The Monti is more or less a year old, he's a transplant of a piece that chipped off on the other side of the tank and I don't think made it through the crash. I think I got the little mushrooms there at the same time, they were flourishing, but have been invisible for quite a while now.
The candy canes are new, a month or so and the purple (xenia?) is about 8 months.
Oh, and lest I forget, the sucked-up Duncan is either one or two years old, don't know which is which (there's another in another part of the tank). This guy hasn't budged since the crash.
Here I've got a green hairy mushroom (right, 1 month) to replace my other awesome one that poofed.
Center is something I picked up a month ago, not sure what it is.
Moving over, my new, 1 month puffer is saying hi and doing well.
The rhodactis mushrooms after three years, are doing better than ever, but the blast (1 or 2 years) is struggling back, but improving.
My month old xenia is doing fine and the year old candy cane behind is doing better.
Within the palys is the last stalk of my 3 year old nuisance Kenya tree. I couldn't get rid of it's spawn fast enough for a while there, just throwing it in the compost eventually. This guy has been in that spot for about two years and has never had great branches and never spawned.
There are some two year whiter palys that bleached a bit in the crash and have thinned out a bit, they were out of control for a while there.
To the left is my 2 year old cabbage leather that was also out of control. Right now half of it is recovering, but the other half looks like it's sick. It's kind of a blueish grey and shiny.
More of the cabbage here and the three year palys to the left that are doing as much as they ever have.
Top center is something that used to be a lot redder when I got it a year ago. It's pretty sensitive and spits out its guts anytime something bothers it, like water changes.
There's a new head of frogs pawn there.
Here's some kind of leather, year old, along with the other blasto and Duncan. There's a 2 year candy cane slowly recovering and some red mushrooms are coming back out.
The green one at the bottom, not sure what it is, is new.
There's a purple a an that had four heads that made it through the crash and was doing relatively well, but now I think it's down to two shrunken heads.
Finally, on the end of my torch skeleton that didn't make it through is something new that doesn't seem to be doing very well. To the right are some more of those mushrooms from the other side.
That's it for my livestock, I've got a shipment with a cleaning crew and some other frags coming next week, so hopefully that'll clean up the rest of the algae and add some more color.
Now, back to reading y'alls posts.
