I sent a PM..

Curious to anyone who knows.....

Are puffers bad news? (I'm new to this)

You should always research before snatching up a freebie... or before adding anything to your tank for that matter. As for your question, it all depends on what your goals for your tank are. Do your research and you will see what I mean... :D

to be fair, I sent a PM and you don't know what it said.

also, I feel 'doing research' involves asking questions. Which I did, here. I have also researched the fishes section of this board, searched 'puffer' on here, and have found mixed results.

So again if anyone knows about puffers or can point me there, let me know.

I'm just basically wondering why someone would give it away and what they are afraid of it eating?

Also, these things eat snails? Is my cleanup crew in danger?

Finally, do they make a big mess or something?

Thanks.

A puffer is a flesh eating predator and will/can eat soft corals and any crabs/inverts you keep in the tank.

They are a neat fish, but are usually reserved for a predatory tank with other fish like lionfish, eels, groupers, tuskfish, etc.

I have seen that you were looking to keep corals, if you still are its probably best that you avoid this fish, it is not reef-safe.

If you do end up with it, make sure you feed it a varied diet and not just krill. Over time krill can wreak havoc on their digestive system and cause them to starve themselves to death. I know someone that was able to overcome this, but it was touch and go the whole time and I am sure that he would agree that its best avoided.

Thanks. I started to get that feeling when a lot of the posts on puffers were in the predatory fish forum. Surprisingly I did not see a lot of talk about corals. I assume most people know by default that puffers and coral don't mix.

Nykademus is correct and I am the one who had trouble by only feeding krill. Anyone who gets this wonderful fish make sure to feed it a varied diet or it WILL die. This is becoming a very documented issue. Porcupine Puffers are awesome with a great personalities, similar to Oscars in freshwater.

My puffer is doing very well now and doesn't bother any corals. But he is the exception, most gobble them up and anything else for that matter. Potroast, YES he will eat your snails and crabs unless they are VERY large.

Sohotang, by any chance did you feed your last Puffer mostly or only Krill??

we got him when he was only 2 inches long he ate everything fresh mussels, fresh shrimp, krill, freeze dried seaweed and several different types of frozen cubed food. we had him for a long time.

I think when our rio pump shorted out it stressed him out and he never recovered, we also lost a dog face puffer, the sohal tang and masked puffer did just fine through it all.
