6 ocellaris die

So i bought some baby clowns sat. They were fine, eating and seemed to be in good health. Tonight i get home and they all have ick, like super bad and one was dead. I took them out fresh water dipped them and the rest died soon after. Now i dont know what i did wrong if i did do anything wrong at all. Maybe im just ranting but did i do something wrong?

Ps. All water perimetes are fine.

I have had a similar problem with one shop that I supply with clowns here in Perth and it looks like that is coming down to food. The fish are picking up a bacterial infection after they reach the shop. The state fisheries department has determined my fish to be disease free but within 2 to 5 days an entire delivery can be dead at this shop.

What are you feeding the fish and what are your water parameters?

Im feeding mysis. Nitrite about 2ppm (thats what i was told!?), PH 8.4, salt 1.025 and temp is 78 degree. Those were the only tests the LFS took when i purchased them. Because nitrites were present i was told to add bacteria then acclimate fish. I also had a tailspot blenny die as well. Total body count since i started hobby is now 28. I so wanna give up!

Nitrite is not good but I doubt it killed all those clowns in 3 days. My guess would be brook not Ich. Ich would have killed them slowly if at all. 6 Clowns in one tank is not a good idea in the long run as they will fight to the death eventually. There are cases where it works but unless you have like 6 anemone's or more so each can have a home it likely won't. Were these in your main tank or a quarantine tank?

They were in my main tank. Im not gonna buy fish anymore and just stock coral. I have had good luck with coral so im jus gonna stick with them. Im also gonna look up brook for i have never heard of it.

No offence but your problem is you dont know what your doing, do some research ONLINE and stop listening to the lfs that is only saying that to make money, you should give them **** one day and im sure they'll say just add some bacteria and your good to go.

No offence taken i am well aware that "I" am the problem. I do spend alot of time reading and such but i was "had" and im a stoop for falling for it.

If you are going to have fish at all you need a quarantine tank. You check on the fish several times a day while they are in the qt tank and have medications on hand should something go awry. IE Copper / Formalin etc. Especially with clowns as they are very prone to brook and it can kill within 24 hours. They should be in the QT tank for 4-6 weeks before entering your main tank. Now that they have been in the main tank with likely brook / ich I would leave the tank with no fish for 6 weeks.

Cool thanks, i will wait for my new tank before i buy anymore fish and use my old tank for QT.

I have to agree that it would be unlikely for your nitrites to have had that severe an effect so quickly and mysis shouldn't cause any issues. You might want to try to track down why you do have a nitrite reading and find out what your ammonia level is. This might help when you set up your new tank and stop you going through it all again. Nitrites will add to stress and potentially have an effect on a fishes immunity. This will make them more susceptable to disease and infection. Find out what has gone wrong this time and avoid it in the future.

Yah for sure i will check everything from now on myself and not listen to LFS. I think it was due to over feeding!

Brook, it was brook disease. I read and read about all the diseases and remember buying clowns with the same signs from them which didnt last to long. I remeber asking about it and they said that it was nothing and it would go away and still sold them to me. 3 days later i asked again and they sold me formalin and stated that they just dipped some of their fish. I have been through the ringer with this LFS and am glad NOW that i have finaly got a handle on the problems.

Thanks to RC and google i now have a healthy (for now) reef tank!

Never buy a fish that has any signs of anything being wrong. While if left in their tank it may recover on its own. Most likely if you bag / transfer it to your tank it will get sick. As long as you are learning you'll move forward and not have the issue again. Be prepared for Brook though if you are going to have clowns. Have the Formalin on hand.

Yah for sure i think i will stay away from clowns for a while and fish in general at that. i wanna make sure i got all this down before i introduce anymore fish.
