But first, a little history:

Ver.1.0.jpg

(c.1996-May, '97)
Reason for demise: Light Shock.

Ver.2.0.jpg

(May '09-Aug. '11)
Reason for demise: Copper Poisoning.

Ver.3.0.jpg

(Oct' '12-Sept. '13)
Reason for demise: Aesthetics, Cyano.

My least favorite build. And even had it not been for the outbreak (more on this later), I would've eventually reworked it anyway. Lesson learned here is that minimalism doesn't go well with very large tanks; either that or I totally suck at minimalism with very large tanks. Anyway, my current set-up is pretty much just adding a lot more rock to ver.3. Nevertheless, it took quite some time as I put this additional rock through it's 'Cooking in Sea Klear' regimen until the PO4 meter read 0 (which did not work, btw), and a four month interruption due to rotator cuff surgery. it was during this time that I got a lot of "I thought you were out of the hobby". Really, guys? I don't post for a few months and it could only be because I'm out of the hobby? Why couldn't something cool have happened; instead, there I am laid up with one useless shoulder (it's amazing how much you need two arms in this hobby), gaining weight, with my teenage daughter channeling Sheckey Greene with regard to my helplessness, and when I turn to RC for solace, boom, "We thought you were out of the hobby'. Well, no. I was healing and once I healed (sort of), I proceeded to finish my rock work.

This is about when the PO4 that I thought I'd gotten rid of returned with a vengeance. Even if it spread from the rocks I had already had in the tank, I thought the new stuff was clean enough to resist the invasion. But it wasn't, and it was bad. At it's height, it was actually overtaking and killing otherwise viable 'sps' frags that I had recently mounted. Soon, I couldn't even see the rocks anymore due to it and it lasted several months. I tried every conventional method of eradication of course, and as much as I dislike going the chemical route to solve an issue, I was one tick away from going with peroxide when Tony Vargas suggested I try sea urchins (both Diadema setosum and Mespilia globulus. I also threw in some Trochus Snails for good measure and in a few months, it was gone. Completely. So, with both the tank and my shoulder truly healed, I laid in the remaining frags and now, without further ado, I present version 4.0; my display tank as we speak:

Ver.4.0.jpg

(Aug. '14-present)

Not too bad, right? Of course, I'm still at the adolescent stage here and most of my smaller frags are still dormant and earth toned but when things begin to fill in, I think I'm going to like this version best. Parameters are very stable, and available on request. Questions and comments welcomed. And finally, to whom it may concern, I'm still in the hobby, fellas. See you at MACNA.

Nice. Glad to see you and your tank over came some adversity. What type of equipment are you running?

Wow, the tank over the years has been quite something, impressive mate! It definitely always has me happy and inspired to see such long serving reefer's :)

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you bring us with Ver 4.0 as it already looks to have an impressive beginning! I'll definitely be following along and hopefully I can learn a thing or two from you :)

Glad you hung in there. This hobby is crazy. Just about the time you are pleased with something...Murphys Law hits and throws you under the bus! I give you credit for not throwing in the towel. I gave up for a few years and now I'm back on a smaller scale. Once the bug is in your blood it's hard to shake it. Glad your here and updating us as well!

Nice tank!! As I mentioned in the all sps tanks thread, love the balance.
In the last paragraph above the photo of v4, you talk about the 'invasion' of po4.. I assume you mean you had a crazy algae outbreak? Hair or cyano? If urchins and snails took care of it , I assume hair but one can never be too sure..
Where do n and p stay for you now?
Interested to see where you tank goes from here!

Ah, questions. I love questions. As far as the cyano was concerned, it was most likely turf algae with a frosting of cyano. Ugly stuff. See?

Unfortunately, I do not have a comparable 'After' shot because I lost this colony during the outbreak. But trust me, ALL of this crap is gone now...and without any chemicals, though the entire process took exactly one year to run its course start-to-finish.

My nitrates register below detection according to Salifert. And according to the results of my latest Triton tests, my P04 was 0.027 mg/l, calcium was 489.80 mg/l, and my Mg was 1332.00 mg/l.

one year... there's perseverance and patience....
what were your n and p back when this stuff took hold?
how are you controlling p these days? I see you are running a denitrator..
Is the Kalk holding the p down on its own?
your Sfiligoi 3xUshio 400W SE 14K MH's + 3x 400W 20K Radium SE, is this the one with the two bulbs mounted side by side under one reflector?

there's some more questions fer ya!

Both my nitrates and PO4 remained low all throughout the outbreak so I guess the extra nutrients came in with the new additional Pukani rock. I DID take this rock through a Seaklear cooking and while those phosphates spiked, my Hanna meter read 0 by the time I added it to the DT. That why the outbreak was so surprising.

I use a GFO/GAC reactor in addition to dosing kalk, aggressive skimming, and bi-monthly water changes to help keep PO4 where it is. My lighting consists of 3 Sfiligoi pendants each containing one 400W 14k and one 400W 20k radium. Each bulb is driven by a Sfiligoi ACLS electronic ballast. My biodenitrator has been with me for several years and by now, is pretty much superfluous as my nitrates are now below detection and have been for quite some time.

Thanks for the info.
Man o man, you must be able to heat your entire house in the winter with those mhs running!
That is LIGHT!

Michael, good to see you are on the comeback trail. Can't wait to see the progress now that things have stabilized.

Great to see a picture of the tank again! I like the your current version, very nice. I think it will look even better once it has grown in.

FWIW I think the minimalist look can work on a large tank, but you have to be willing to wait (sometimes a long time) for the coral to really grow in and fill the really large gaps that a large tank will have. Easier to do with a smaller tank when there is not as much open space to fill.

THIS, as far as I'm concerned, is one of the most difficult and frustrating periods of reef keeping: Waiting for that maturation process to kick in. Right now I'm in the "nothing's-really-wrong-but-all-is-not-quite-right" stage, just before things start to shift out of first gear. But it's been well over a year and I don't ever recall it taking this long before.
