6500K 55W t5 lamps for the Red Sea Max 130D?

Hi all!

I have a Red Sea Max 130D with the two standard 10.000K t5 lamps. However, I (try to) grow temperate seaweeds instead of tropical corals. As I collect my seaweeds from shallow rock pools exposed to distinctly non-tropical (British) sun light, I'd like to refit the hood with two 6500k 55W lamps. Do any of you know if these are available at all?

Michiel, I like your blog and your tank. It reminds me of my days collecting algae on the coast of Maine for my Phycology class, but that was many decades ago. I hope to set up a touch tank in my classroom in the fall.

One thing, you want to get a refractometer. That Instant Ocean hydrometer is notorious for false readings. Do you see the air bubbles on the lever arm in your picture? Those may give a false reading. While I do agree with you that your salinity is probably too high, a refractometer will let you know for sure. And yes, creatures that live in the littoral zone of the ocean are subjected to some of the most extreme and sudden condition changes on Earth, over and over again, and yet they thrive!
 
I should have noticed before, but we call those power compact / compact fluorescent bulbs here in the states not T5 bulbs. ;p

Your tank is very interesting, you don't see temperate tanks vey often & I really like how colorful yours has become, beautiful.

So that's an actinic & 6500k you ended up using?

yes, it is fun to experiment and be able to relate what happens in the tank to what happens in nature, something that is much more difficult with reef tanks I suppose. I think having a tank with native critters and seaweeds in the class room will be a great inspiration for kids!

I am a stingy Dutchman and 30 quid for a refractometer is a bit too much. I have made a water change since the post and the salinity dropped. It won't have been a very accurate reading, but as you say it does not need to be for a rock pool tank.

yes, I now use one standard 10.000K and the new daylight 6500K, I think it is a good compromise.

Now on to save for a silent chiller, do you guys happen to have a recommendation?
