Hi everyone!
I'm a freshly subscribed RC member but I've been reading and taking advice since I've started my modest 90 gal reef tank 3 years ago. Prior to that, i had been in the FW hobby for 10 years.
I've been looking especially into the LRT forums recently but now i need some specific advice from you guys for my future tank
short facts, my wife is into the hobby as well, so she supported me when i told her about the project. I've put a nice lump of money for that project but i know that is far to be the only key for success.
If i want to have a good result, i need a well planned project, the proper equipment, maintenance and probably the most important patience!
So let's talk project:
I'm about to start my future house construction here in France, and off course I couldn't say no to a big integrated tank in the living room (aimed at hosting moderate population of fish (but few tangs off course) and sps/lps)
I've asked the builders to plan a reinforced concrete foundation (single storey house), so I'm good on that side.
The tank will be inside the "fish room" (not dedicated unfortunately so space saving is an important factor, like sump will be below the tank). 3 faces visible from the living room.
I have planned on a special air extraction intake, made in stainless steel with an integrated condensate drain line, to prevent build up of humidity.
Tank:
253cm (8') x 120cm (4') x 90cm (3') tall. (i know it's going to be a pain but i like tall tanks :debi
Volume: 2690 Liters (710 Gal)
Glass, 19mm (3/4") tick most likely (i still have to finish drafts and submit quote for the tank fabrication)
I would like to have a full angle bar welded to square tube top frame and a bottom angle bar reinforced with flat bar across for rigidity (Stainless steel), instead of the traditional glass cut / silicone reinforcements, but that's not an imperative. not sure if someone have seen or use this before (what do you guys think?):
Holes:
I'm on a safe side here too, just 3 or 4 holes on the upper section of the back glass for overflow. No CL because i don't like too much the idea of having holes in the bottom...
Stand:
May have done a bit of an overkill design here but after all that's at least 3.5 metric tonnes...DIY rectangular tubes welded together, with a couple of epoxy coating on it. I've don't some CAD simulation with overweight tank / water and the deflection will be minimal, less than a millimeter, so i should be OK on that side!
Overflow:
Still some work to be done here but I'll try to go for a full length teeth weir, and an approved full siphon + durso and a couple of emergency pipes. (as per this thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1541946&highlight=full+siphon )
Sump:
Like mention previously, it will have to be below the tank inside the frame, and due to the reinforcement in the middle it will be a bit less than half the length of the tank. the other half will most likely receive as large as possible quarantine tank and maybe a frag tank or refugium (not sure about the last one).
I really like the royal exclusiv dream boxes but i need to use more space on the back to increase the sump volume IMO.
Most likely i'll end up DIY, PVC/ plexiglass construction.
Skimmer:
From what i could read and my requirements (SPS/LPS + no much space so internal skimmer), i was thinking to go for the Supermarin 300 (or 400??) or maybe the Deltec 3070 (or 3070S)...or....ATB???another skimmer debate :hammer: I would really like to have an automated neck cleaner. I'll put the collection cup drain directly to the drain but in that case how can i make sure that it will not overflow for several hours and mess up my tank?
By the way some guys seams to think that a multiple pumps skimmer is a meaning of redundancy but does this kind of skimmer with one pump off will still really pull detritus out? Did someone tested that fact?
Calcium:
Look like for this volume I'll have no choice but go for calcium reactor, maybe a mix of both two part / reactor for a little safety? i have no previous experience with reactor so i still need to read a lot on that and take your advice!
Dosage pumps, I've got a bubble magus unit, and I've just bought two extensions module so 11 channels total.
Flow:
Sorry to all CL system fans, but i have to be efficient regarding flow per watt, and i prefer less holes in the tank so:
Tunze all the way, I'm very happy with them, got a 7096 controller, one 6055, one 6095 and one 6155 (yes my poor fishes have to swim hard, sorry^^), and a wave box, but the two smaller ones will most likely end up in the QT/frag tank.
For the DT, not sure yet but I'll say 6 to 8 x 6155, and two wavebox on each side of the tank, 6208 / 6215?What do you think?
I'll like to find suction cups fixation for the future pumps to avoid having the magnets on the visible sides of the tank, if someone have a link, please let me know
I better stop here, way to long post, i'll keep the rest of the questions for later on (lighting / tank management / etc....:debi: )
Thanks in advance to take the time to read my post and let me know your opinion (I'm open to all critics!)
bye
