can someone enlighten me on how one would drive an 80w t5 ho. Or for that matter multiple 80w t5s. say 8 of them

80w T5 bulbs are 5ft long. You'd look at what a certain ballast would be able to support.

For instance, a IceCap 660 can drive up to 16ft.
that would give you 3 bulbs /IC660 ballast.

I run 6 80w T5's using Icecap 660 Ballasts (2 of them) over my 220 and with good reflectors (Icecap as well) they put out a LOT of light.
