90G reef need some info.

I have a 90 gallon tank, I was going to try and sell the 90 and buy a "reef ready" 75. I've found a place where I can get the tank drilled.

does the extra 4" make a 90G more expensive than a 75???

I guess what i'm trying to ask is. Would I be better off selling the 90 or tradeing the 90 off and get a 75Gallon tank??

Please help, I have no clue on this matter.

In ALL cases... used tank is worth 1/2 down to 1/4 the cost of the same tank new. In general, RR tanks are worth more, as are tanks that are drilled in a reasonable manner. Some tanks sizes are very common, some are not. Certain brands are worth more, like Oceanic.

Now specifically, a 75 RR will cost you far more than you will get for your 90g used. 75 and 90 gallon tanks are very common. You can regularly score a 90g tank < $100.

Something to think of, Cleveland has a big active club, and I'm 100% sure someone up there can drill your tank. A couple of holes, bulkheads and some arcylic for an overflow box inside the tank and you are farther ahead than the 75 RR for less money.

My 2 cents. Good luck to you.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have drilled all of my tanks and used glass and gutterguard to make overflows. I like being able to choose where the bulkheads will be placed and what size/shape the overflows will be. There are a few places where you could buy ready-made overflows that just need to be siliconed into place and they have the pretty fingers all cut into them.

What type of lighting should I use, I want to mainly do softcorals, but then again I like some of the stony's aswell.

I really appreciate the help!!

You might want to start a new post for lighting suggestions. That is a major can of worms, and you will hear from 3 or 4 groups of people.

G1 - "Only Halides Can Grow Coral"
G2 - "VHOs rule"
G3 - "T5 > you"
G4 - "Even PC owners hate PCs"

All four groups will tell you their own brand of lies and half truths. Well, except the PC people. They will tell you how badly you don't want PCs. :) For the record, I am a recovering G4, current G2, and soon to try G1. Though I've seen VHOs grow every coral that exists, so that koolaid will be hard to drink.

I can say that I have used PC in the past and currently have MH with VHO supplementation...I think certain kinds of corals do better under MH and certain do better under PC, but that is as much based on intensity as type...i.e. more PC will get a similar result to less MH

if you are really intending on doing mostly soft corals, meaning actual soft corals, not LPS, then PC, VHO, or T5 should be more than enough light...LPS, anemone's MH might work better depending on tank size and depth...SPS you really need MH unless you like brown sticks

honestly though, you are talking about either a 90 or a 75 gallon tank? it will probably cost you almost as much to do PC adequately on a tank that size as to just shell out for MH

check out Ocean Encounter dot com...they have some great deals on MH retro kits...that's where I got mine

Almost the same? How much longer/wider is it. A buddy of mine has a 110 and its the same footprint as a 90 but 3-4" taller.

I would like to do a 8' tank but not too deep. If I could get the wife to go for it, I would build an 96 x 20 x 24 it figures out to be approx 199.48 gallons

120gal All-Glass is 24" front to back instead of the 18" of the 90g.

I am in the T5 group and I think bigdaddyadam should see my growth pics in this forum if he thinks you can't grow SPS under T5's :D

I have 4 clams and a bunch of SPS that are colored up and growing nicely. I have them in a 75g and used to only have 2 overdriven T5 but added 2 more T5's a couple months ago.

ahhh the over driving of flourescents there is a topic I have not seen much of in a while, it works great but shortens bulb life

I don't know much about over driving T5's or VHO's...what I say about color of SPS is based solely on photos I have seen of tanks with SPS under T5's and honestly they just weren't as colorful as under MH...on the other hand I would love to see some pics that prove me wrong b/c MH are expensive to run and if i could save money by running T5's I might consider it...how many watts of T5 do you actually run with the overdrive of the bulbs?
