Thanks for the compliments! The first three are probably my favorites, but I like the full fram coral shots, which is why I stuck the xenia and tort up there.

I was using the 18-70mm f:3.5-4.5 DX (D-70 kit lens).

Thanks for the compliments!

I still feel like such a photo newb. Compared to photography reef keeping is a breeze. I've only had the camera for about 9 months now and was thoroughly impressed with some of my first shots, but looking back on them it's amazing how much I've improved with them and the post processing, but I still have a long way to go.

The shots above are a mix between some older ones and new ones, but overall I think they are some of the better shots. I really like the blue tang shot, but am thinking I may have been able to do something different with the crop to get a better image; any insight? I wish the eyes would come out better, but they are so dark it's hard for me to get them to show in any image. The blenny shot is from a couple of months ago, but up until the tang shot it was my favorite fish picture. The top down shot of the gomenzi (3rd picture) is probably my favorite coral shot, but as I mentioned above I really like the full frame coral shots which is why I stuck the last two on the there. I think the tort shot could have been much better, but I still like the image. I like the ricordea shot, but I am not sure about it; something about that shot seems out of place, but I'm not sure what it is. Perhaps over sharpening, but I don't think I did much sharpening to it.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

If you're using Photoshop to post process then you can use variations (under the Image menu) to lighten the midtones and/or the shadows as necessary to tease out some of the detail in those respective zones.

Thanks again for all of the compliments!

astrogazer, thanks for the tip! I never knew you could select a specfic area and do the adjustments to just that area. I tried it with the tang, but couldn't get anything that I really liked.

The tang you have there would be challenging, you really don't want to lose to much detail in the highlights, and to get a lot of detail in the eye area will probably kill your contrast, with additional lighting you'll have more luck with such subjects.

I played around with it a little using the levels, contrast, highlights and some other things, but to get something that was noticeable it just looked out of place. You'd think with 400 watt Iwasakis I'd have enough light (ha). I've tinkered with the idea of picking up the SB-600, but I think my next move will probably be the 50mm f1.8 with the reversing ring or the kenko tubes.

okay, I know basically nothing about photography. I don't know if I want to learn all the manual settings. It seems really complicated and I want right now results. so, I want a camera that'll function mostly for taking pictures of the kids and vacations and things, but I'd also like to get some nice tank shots. Is this a camera for that purpose? Can these pictures be taken my just using the zoom or do you have to manually adjust things like shutter speed and fstop and whatever?

If you know of a good camera that would fit my needs I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

By the way, these pictures are beautiful.
