A. Echinata bleaching :(

I picked up one of the few A. Echinata's from Live Aquaria last week and it was delivered on Saturday morning. It came in nice and looked all right.

I dipped in coralRX and some nasty bugs came out which I was glad that I got out. I then placed it on the bottom of my tank with moderate flow and medium/low light to slowly acclimate it. But since then, it has been turning white from the bottom moving up. It's a 5" branch and only the top 2" are left that has color. Unfortunately i don't have a QT tank as I'm tight on space.

My params are stable as I checked last night.

Should i redip it tonight to make sure or is there something or should i leave it alone? I understand they're pretty delicate so i don't want to restress it further.

Any help is appreciated.

Water changes: 10% ~ 12% every week
Lighting: Tek Elite 6x39 Actinics on for 1 hour -- Full light on for 6 hours -- Actinics on for 2 hours

How long did you dip it for? Where in the tank did you place the coral?

I dipped it for about 8 min. Directions say 5 - 10 so i picked the middle.

It didn't come attached to a frag plug so i used some super glue gel and attached it to a plug and placed it on the sand bed out of direct light but still an area with good flow.

Echinata's don't like to be dipped, they're very sensitive to chemical treatment.

That's unfortunate...do you think it's a lost cause and ruined it or does it have a fighting chance?

Honestly I couldn't ID them. They were about 1 or 2cm long and skinny with a bunch of legs and were swimming around. There was about 3 of them total.

There was other brownish things that came off but couldn't tell if it was AEFW or not.

echinatas and turakis burn very easily from the dips. count your losses and frag immediately

when i dip those i just violently shake them in the solution for less than a minute. i lost 2 turakis from dipping before

It's def a sad day then. I wasn't aware that they were sensitive to dipping. I think i'm gonna take off work early and frag what i can.

+1 on the Turaki's being sensitive. I never dip them for more than 3 mins. in ReVive. Everything else dips for 5 to 6 mins. with a powerhead running to blow off any bugs.

+1. I have heard several stories where a reefer dips an ORA Hawkins, for example, and it just melts away.

So i took off work early and came home to frag it. Still have about 2 inches that has color and hopefully i'll be able to save it. A good chunk of branch came off as well and threw that on a separate plug as well.

Definitely a lesson learned...an expensive one at that!
