I agree with bigevill, for now that tang is fine. how many LFS do you go to that have much bigger tangs in small tanks for long amounts of time, with no bad effect. I had one in my 20 that grew to almost 3 inches, which was the main reason I bought my 55. he was and is still very fat and happy and HEALTHY. and when he starts to get too big for the 55, well I suppose it's a good excuse to get a bigger tank

Why not just go for at least a 75g? Its not that much more expensive and the length is the same. Also, the tang police might leave you alone.

Because I got the 55 tank for free, along with the sump and overflow box as well.

I hate to break it to you but if you had him in a 12 gallon for 4 months then either he would be way to big for it or he would not be growing nearly fast enought.
