A few upgrades and questions

I started out small, getting a 40 gallon breeder from my LFS. I wanted to get my feet wet and have a better understanding before I went bigger. At the LFS, I met a "helpful" person who told me what I ended was crushed coral for sub straight. I picked up a few bags and set up my tank with the sub straight and some LR.

I wanted to know more about my tank, thus started searching the great web. I found this awesome place called "Reef Central" which is amazing!!! I found a very sad thing though as I began reading the "So you got a new fish tank Newbie" by WaterKeeper. I really wish I had looked things up before I jumped in the water.

My tank has already completed it's cycle and has fish enjoying whats there. I want to upgrade my tank step by step. As I'm reading this post, I'm realizing that what I needed as a sub straight was sand!!! My question is this, is it possible to move all the crushed coral to one side, place some kind of "divider" and place a cup of sand or so (not live, just from Home Depot) every few days? I would do this slowly so not to create a huge "sand storm" with my fish already in there. I understand there will be some clouding and "storm", but I don't want to over do it by placing a 4" sand bed all at once.

Also, If I do the above with a divider; would I still need to add LS or would the Home Depot sand be fine with the crushed coral and LR in the tank?

Thanks for any help!! All advice shall be sought after here at RC rather then LFS from now on!!! Thanks,

Bradley
