A frag tray

Hi y'all,

I got inspired by the DIY projects that people are working on lately and decided to get my small project finished.

It's a simple little frag tray made of an egg crate sheet. It's suspended near the top of my tank on the left hand side. I used two narrow strips of Plexiglas to hang it from the side of the tank.

Here's the picture of the tray:

It is hanging near the top in the left side of my 120G. I hope you can see:

Sorry about the poor white balance, but this is the best I can do with my camera. It does ok sometimes, but a full tank shot usually come out kinda blue under my 14K Phoenix bulbs.

Here's some zoa frags on the tray. The colors of this picture came out pretty all right:

H@rry, do you recognize these?

The offspring of your corals grew up quite a bit :)

I uploaded some more pictures in my gallery if any of you are interested in seeing what corals I am keeping lately.

Thanks, Mary.

The tray was suspended by two Nori clips until I made two hanging straps. Clips worked fine, but I bumped the tray when I was cleaning around it and the tray tilted spilling a few frags. So I had to come up with more secure method to support my tray.

Let me know it those kids don't behave!

Larry Jackson Purple Tip acro and Orange cap are model citizens. Can't complain about them, but I can't say the same about the digis. Both orange and green digis are getting a bit invasive. I did not know how much space they command. I need a bigger aquarium ;)

Looks great!I made one of those using egg crate and over the door hooks from Wal-Mart.Didnt like the way it looked in my tank at first but now I love it!I was always Lookin for frags that had jumped off the rock overnite. This tray stoped the morning search routine.

I got a Orange Monti Cap from Mariner. Is it a relitive of the one you have from H@rry?I luv it and its doing great!

This tray stoped the morning search routine.

Lol, I was also searching day and night because of my turbo and blue linkia busy bulldozing my corals. They sometimes manage to move pretty large colony if it's not secured really well. These reef bulldozers cost me a few frags.

Too funny, Tomoko! In a turkey-induced near-coma, I drew out plans for one of those myself. Almost exactly the same result. Of course, I haven't built mine yet. (rolls eyes)

Lol, wpecoul. Wonder what brand of turkeys we all were eating. I saw another posting today about the very same thing except for the support system. The post in RC showed a picture of a frag tray supported by a long skinny Magfloat.

A great new find!!

A great new find!!

I bought a very promising looking zoanthid colony (a small orange size) from The Aquarium Shop on Sunday for just $29.99. In their tank the zoas looked grayish. It was called Atlantic Sea Mat. I made a few small frags off the mother colory and put them on my tray. Here's what I found a few hours later (one on the left):

The colony is a mix of medium blue, light blue and teal colored zoas.

Mother colony

Mother colony

Here's 2/3 of the mother colony (the one from The Aquarium Shop) trying to open up.

Do you see the polyps that look like Alien Eyes among other blues?

Pete has been getting these Atlantic Sea Mat every so often. I have been tempted to get them before, but I always had an eye on something else and passed it up, too. Can't afford to get everything :sad2: He said that he would try to get some more. :)

I have 1/4 of the mother colony in my 15G which is lit by 120W of PC's (one daylight and one actinic.) Under the PC's this colony does not look good at all. The other blue zoanthid frags I posted earlier are all pretty nice and blue in 15G, too. Kind of different, isn't it?

I learned from Blane Perun of Sea.org long time ago that he collected many of his gorgeous pieces from LFS's, taking a chance on some pieces that looked promising. When divers collect corals in the wild, they pick those that are pretty and therefore command high prices. So I also take a chance on a promising looking one from time to time.

Almost four years ago I picked up a beautiful neon green zoanthids with pink rim and yellowish green skirt from the Aquarium Shop, too. That colony looked faint yellow in Pete's tank. I wish he puts a MH lamp over one of his tank and keep his corals there.

Although some people bash The Aquarium Shop for the appearance of diatom and salt spray on the glass, the store is actually a little treasure chest for me. I have gotten many great things such as my yellow watchman goby and an red and white alpheus shrimp pair, a high fin goby and the same shrimp pair, a powder blue porcelain crab, a blue acropora and many more...

So let's support our LFS's!! I know, I know, some of you are saying there she goes again. :o

I agree Tomoko - Pete's is a treasure trove. Speaking of pieces that look promising, I traded KNG for a frag some time ago at Steve's house and it was only a mat-looking pale encrusting "thing". Turns out it is one of the most beautiful acros(and fastest growing) in my tank. Thanks Kyle.

Great frag shelf Tomoko!! And a great idea for supporting it. Your tank looks super!!!

Glad to here it's doing good! It was a slow growing acro with some indication of purple when I had it. I no longer have the mother colony :( Got any pics of it now? Didn't see any in your gallery.

Kyle,

I do have pics of it, but am having the darndest time trying to get my pics small enough to upload. I used to could do it easily, but then along came Adobe Photo Shop and I cannot figure out anything, so I will keep on trying. Sorry. Otherwise, I will mail you a hard copy!

Bringing back a dead thread, while looking at the frag tray in Tomoko's gallery I couldn't help but notice the growth from the picture above and the one here from a 6-15-05 just a year and a half before. Hope you dont mind me posting it Tomoko
