A good reliable float switch is hard to come by

Hi everyone
its been a while since i've made any posts at good'ol reef cent^. but my tank is doing great. i'll post some pics one of these days. anyway, i am in need of a good reliable float switch for my auto top off system. i've tried two already that i've purchased from ebay (for like $5) and they have failed. i have come to the realization that i am going to have to break out the green and get one that will not fail. does anyone have any particular switches they would recomend? a link to a dealers website would be much appreciated.

p.s. i'm looking for the kind of switch that turnes on when the water level drops.

LifeReef....I've been using one for a few years now without any problems dosing topoff with kalk...just keep it clean.

I've been using the ones from floatswitches.net (might be the same as ebay) and haven't had any problems in the year and a half i've been using them.

I also use the floatswitches from floatswitches.net. I use two in my topoff system, the second one acts an emergency cutoff if you will.

i have two form floatswitches.net and they seem to be working flawlessly so far, about 3 months, i clean them with my pumps every month. I have one that gets used regularly and on that is an emergency high switch. HTH, Mike

I have used mine from floatswitches.net for over a year without fail, and I have not cleaned it once (though I probably should).

Tunze osmolator, one of the best purchases I've ever made for my tank.

Amen to that. I love my osmolator. Plus, "osmolator" just sounds so much cooler than "float switch". :D

I also use the floatswitch. com kind. I use mine as a cutout for the powerhead that supplies water to my fuge. It is a very small unit and I fused it with a.5 amp fuse just in case anything stupid happens with the powerhead. My powerhead runs continuously so the switch does not see much use as in on/off and only uses 8 watts of power. If you are going to run a real pump just use the switch with a relay i have had no trouble with mine so far

float switches

float switches

I've been using Reef Fanatic floats. (reeffanatic.com) Set of two float switches. Can be hook up various ways. I use the second one as an emergency back up. Only problem so far is method of attatchment. They use suction cups that can slide up with water level as slime builds up on sump wall. Looking into using magnets instead. Other than that very reliable.

I never even bothered to use the suction cups. Mine are siliconed to small mag floats.

i'm thinking i'm going to have to check out floatswitch.net. thanks guys

and ozmolator does sound way cooler than float switch... but i haven't got that far to stretch my budget. maybe when i upgrade to a bigger tank
