A Zoe question

Hi, Im new to the SW- coral world, I wanted to know what your opinion was. Once my tank is cycled for a while and zoes are on my list for my first coral. I can buy 9 frags of 10-20 pieces each frag, these zoes will be colorful. The other option is to buy 3 frags of only 5 or so pieces in each frag but these are fantastic looking. How long wouls the second option take to grow ? Does it depend on the strain of zoes ? Thanks:thumbsup:

It depends on a number of things. The type of zoa/paly is one, lighting and water conditions are others. I have one type that went from 5 polyp to 50 in only a couple of months. While I have another type that has taken a year to go from 2 to 8 polyps. One thing to learn with saltwater is nothing is done in a hurry. If these are your first corals start slow and easy. Get something you like and enjoy. Just remember that there will be road bumps along the way i.e. you will lose some along the way.

I'll chime in with my experience here. My tank is a bit over a month old, everything has gone perfectly. I've been really drawn to Zoas, and when the LFS had some very small frags and were will to sell them to me for $3 a piece, I jumped on it as I wasn't going to be out much money if they didn't make it. Needless to say I'm seeing growth on 2 of the three within 2 weeks. I'm thrilled and can't wait to find some more small frags. I really like watching them grow out.

The frag swap coming up in April may be bad news for my wallet.

Zoas are a weird creature. I still can't get them to take to my 180 but they love the nano. Some grow amazingly fast and others not so much. Take my devils armor for example. The frag I bought from the LFS has grown probably 20 heads in 6 months, but the frags left at the store have grown only 5.
