well guys i hope you all have some advice i have had this deruasa for about 6 months now it have white stridation marks all over it's skin. and now about 3 weeks after that it is acting funny like it might die. now i did just have a crosea die but i do not know why my water is perfect except my Kh is 15 and i like it at 14. and it just up and died over night. now i also just bought a squmosa that is beautiful. now the only thing i think it could be is my amount of light. first off i have a 80 gal and the water is about 2 feet deep. i have 3 175mh bulbs ( 1 20K and 2 6500K) and a 96W actinic PC light strip. do you all think i have enough light to sustain my clams in the sand bed as that is where they are. i am about to purchase 330W more of VHO's next week and build a new hood for it. and i am sure that will help. well i hope you all have some advice about my situation as i do not know much about calms but only recently started haveing problems with them. thanks for the help in advance. bye

It is not your lights. Your lights are more than adequate for clams. I have been keeping clams in my tank for over a year now, without losing one. I have two 175watt Mh's over it with 210watts of VHO actinics. More than likely the clam was sick when you got it, or your water parameters are off. what is your pH, Ca, Nitrates, Ammonia? Do you have any fish or inverts in your tank that could be picking on your clams? How about a bristle worm?

welll my water is fine...my salinity is a little low it is 1.019 so i am raising it. my cal. is ok i am sure of that. i am jsut not sure.

PBNHam.. first off your salinity is too low. It should be between 1.024-1.026. I would recommend slowly raising it slowly over time.

Second.. 175w MH will not pentrate down to 24". Normally 175w MH for 18" or less and 250w MH for 24" or less. But Deresa require less light than Croceas or Maximas. So the Deresa should be fine. But i do recommend moving it off the substrate and onto your rockwall..

thanks for the input. still i have 3 175mh's does that make a diff. at all i mean right now i have 600 plus watts on my take and i am about to have 330W more.

thanks for the input

PBNHam.. with 3 x 175w MH just means that you have a great deal of light on the top 18" of your tank. It won't affect how far the light will pentrate into the water.

With 175w MH, you shouldn't have a problem keeping any type of clam as long as they are higher up in your tank.

One thing, I forgot to ask. How big are the clams that you are purchasing?? More that 3" in size??
