I am going to start a thread soon on duel 500 gallon tanks. This will be a total system volume of approximately 1300G when set up. There is no thougth of having 1 large tank vs two 500g..... The tanks will be next to each other seperated by a 52"TV......
Tank 1 is going to be SPS/slight mix
Tank 2 will be more of an angel tank with less concentration of corals as it will be a constant fight trying to get a balance...Yes I know the difficulties in keeping corals and angels....this is why it is tank 2.
I have a choice of doing split filtration or 1 combined.
Advantage/Disadvantage of a SPLIT SYSTEM:
Main advantage is if I have an emergency or tank crash on one tank, I can use the other tank for housing purposes...also if I do have some problems, I dont lose both tanks...only 1
Flexibility...at some point I could decide to change one of the sytems to say a predator tank....
Disadvantage is increased cost, less stable body of water at 500g vs 1000g and more maintenance.
Advantage/Disadvantage of a SINGLE FILTERATION SYSTEM:
Obviously the disadvantages of the split are the advantages of a single system...It will be cheaper in equipment, more stable and less work. However, I do run the risk of a major problem taking down everything. Furthermore, I will have 2 tanks coming into the sump with either two separate returns or a split return.... I am wondering aloud if I will have problems matching flows?
Would like everyone's thoughts...THANKS!
