About to UG question about sand use

I am about to UG from a 6' 125 to an 8' 240. The sand bed is really healthy and a little over a year old. Doesn't get siphoned much but never detritus on the bed that I see.

When moving to the new tank, is it ok to reuse the old sand or will that cause spikes in ammonia, organics, etc? I'd hate to lose all the life in it, but would hate to lose all my coral and fish more.

You can use the sand again, but you might want to siphon out the top half inch or so and set this aside. Remove the rest and clean this with the garden hose again. Once it's clean go ahead and add it to the new tank and then put the "live sand" on top of that. Piece of cake. GL.

I would use mostly new sand and seed it with a mix of your old sand
