Acan bacterial infection?

I'm working on my new tank and wanting to make it an acan dominate system. Does this come with any worries like a bacterial infection, RTN, etc? Have you guys had any problems with acans?

The reason I ask is because I have read on a few threads from the past that people have lost all their colonies from this.

Any way to prevent it?

I have several acan coral in my system and I am very careful about my introduction procedures. I ALWAYS dip my coral (with ReVive by two little fishes) before I introduce them into my system and put them on a "frag rack" with space separating them from other acans in waiting. After a week of observation then I begin the placement process.

I have found that if you get one that despite your best efforts decides to "melt" I treat with Melafix by API - be sure to carefully follow the directions. I also us the Melafix if I start to see the tissue turn a lighter color. For the most part I have been successful and in the past 10 months have only lost one, luckily it was a very small frag.

If I think a frag doesn't look good then I will do a Lugol's dip, and I definitely dip in Lugol's when I frag.

Hope that helps, and this is just from my limited experience and what I have been able to garner from talking to more knowledgable sources.

And be careful.....ACANs are addicting. Just when you think you have the colormorphs you like, another comes along - and you have to have it.

If you want to be safe, and get some of the really big colonies, I would setup a small QT system that runs constantly, and QT every coral that you get for a few weeks. One of my friends has 1600ish gallons in his house, he only QTs coral if he finds a reason to. I use Coral RX as it is a bit more gentle for the coral, leave it in for about 15 minutes, inspect closely, if you see anything, QT, if not, you should be good to go.
